Connaught Place, Delhi

Located in the heart of New Delhi, Connaught Place is the commercial, tourist and transportation center in New Delhi, surrounded by numerous tourism attractions, from which to Old Delhi, Paharagan, railway station and Rajpath are very convenient. It is a large circular square, with Central Park as the center to stretch around eight roads.

Who, when and why built Connaught Place?

In 1931, in order to build a new city that could replace old Delhi, architect Edwin Lutyens designed and built Connaught Place under the planning of then-Governor Russell. So it can be said to be a witness to the construction of New Delhi, a symbol of India's modernization and the center of New Delhi. It was named after the Duke of Connaught, who happened to visit Delhi at that time. There are many kinds of shops around the Connaught Place, as well as Delhi's busiest metro station built underground, and many companies set their headquarters here.

What is there in Connaught Place?

Connaught Place has a variety of brand stores, specialty restaurants, tourist offices where you can have a wonderful shopping experience. Hotels, cinemas, post offices, banks, exchange offices, air company, pharmacies and state government are also located here. There is a small park in the middle of the Connaught Place for tired pedestrians to rest.

Because there have been bombings here, and due to safety concerns, the bins in Connaught Place have been completely removed and visitors are suggested to bring their own garbage bags.

How to travel from Delhi airport to Connaught Place

The distance between these two places are around 14 km. People can get to Connaught Place by subway every ten minutes and it takes around 25 minutes. If you take taxi, it takes about 20 minutes.
