We enjoyed every single minute. Thanks again and we are looking forward to visiting Xi‘an again. Not forget to mention: Mr. Dong was a great, smooth and friendly driver ??

My Chinese is okay and I generally navigate tourist areas by myself in China, but I’m so glad I decided to take this tour. It’s perfect whether you live in China or are just a visitor who doesn’t speak a word of Chinese!

Lily met me at a Metro station (as my hotel was outside the pickup area) where we met with the driver, who had picked up the other couple on my tour. The whole day we were in a nice minivan with free water bottles.
We drove to the terracotta warriors, first stopping to meet the farmer who discovered them (he was at the official museum shop where you could buy history books he would sign). Lily then walked us to the 3 different parts of the terracotta warriors museum/pits, providing incredible historical information and letting us know where to get the best pictures. We got lunch at a local restaurant outside the museum, then drove to the Little Goose Pagoda. Unfortunately it was unexpectedly closed, but Lily did an amazing job adjusting on the fly and instead took us to the Xi’an History Museum, where she provided an amazing impromptu tour with historical information. We then drove to the Xi’an City Wall, heading to the top while she explained the history. We looked at the views and got pictures, but because it was snowing and cold, decided not to stay for long. We then drove to the Muslim food street area, where she walked us around and helped me find the Metro station at the end. She recommended going to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area at night after the tour - awesome idea! Huge plaza and food area with a light and water show.
Throughout the day there were unexpected delays/problems (nothing to do with the tour - just because it was the first snow of the year and the city wasn’t prepared), but Lily did an outstanding job accommodating these situations. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Xi’an and wanting to hit all the city highlights.
If you’re looking to extends your trip to Xi’an, I’d recommend a day trip to Huashan (Mt. Hua) - only 30 minutes by bullet train. Also, Shaolin Temple (home of Kungfu) isn’t too far from Xi’an. First of all if you are non-Chinese, you have all sorts of passport issues when purchasing tickets at counters with some one that has virtually no English skills. Then, if you do not sign up for a tour that picks you up at your hotel, you need to have Wechat on your phone connected to your credit card to order a taxi to go to the site. Further, you would need to be fluent in Mandarin to talk to the taxi service. All of these critical problems are solved when you book the trip through Tripadvisor!
As for the tour guide Lilly, you may want to request that she be your guide. Myself, I am very familiar with Chinese history. However, she provided many key insights into these historical sites. She noted that it was March 28th, 1974 when seven villagers from Xi'An were digging a well due to the drought. Instead, they found some of the warriors from the Terracotta Army. Of the seven who found this incredible discovery, five of them have passed away. Lilly was able to introduce me to one of the two surviving men who discovered the Terracotta Army. I now have an autographed copy of his book and a picture of meeting him. Is an autographed Chinese history book something that you would like to leave to your grandchildren?
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda on this tour is one of the most famous pagodas in China for two reasons: (1) it was built by Empeor Taizong in 629 AD. Taizong was one of China's greatest emperors, he is also the emperor that sent Xuanzang the Chinese Buddhist monk to obtain much better copies of the Buddhist scriptures. The Buddhist Xuanzang's Journey to the West (i.e. India) inspired one of China's four greatest fictional novels, which we call the "Monkey King." (2) The Pagoda was originally five stories high. However, Wu Zetian, the only lady whoever became the Emperor in China, expanded it to seven stories. At that time, it was the tallest building in Xi'An. Wu Zetian became a concubine of the emperor at age 13, and then many years later became one of China's best governing Emperors.
Xi'An's city wall. Maybe you have visited a castle in Europe and seen one of their outside walls guarding the castle. However, unless you have walked the Great Wall of China or visited the city wall around Nanjing, European castle exterior castle walls are nothing in comparison to Chinese city walls. These were built so wide that chariots could easily travel both directions.
Finally, end the night at the Muslim Bazaar and try the street food. In China, street delicacies are a Chinese culture by themselves. Sometimes you might find something similar at a cultural event in the U.S., but never to the extent you will see here. The only problem you may have is that your stomach might not be big enough to hold all of the Chinese delicaes that you will want to taste.
My last recommendation, you want to ask for Lily as your guide. Her English skills are excellent and knowledge of Chinese culture is extensive.Collapse

Day 1, I was feeling under the weather so I asked Mr Barry to start later. Mr Barry was very accommodating and resourceful arranging things around so we can still hit everything planned for the day. Even more, in our first destination, I left my passport at the hotel. Mr Barry patiently and strategically adjusted the itinerary so we could still hit all the experiences. We ended up still able to visit Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square
Day 2, we went to Great Wall. The experience was super seamless, and I had so much fun!

- FDFabio DigiglioItalyOct 18, 2023ExcellenceTCGT is a company you need for an “all inclusive” trip in China. Emily arranged for us a perfect tailored itinerary based on our preferences. Hotel, transports and guides were professional, gentle and fluent English-speaking. We thank TCGT for such wonderful and perfect vacation in China and we highlight its services to everyone.
- WRWilliamSep 27, 2023Beautiful Scenery in SwitzerlandBeautiful scenery. Hotel proximity to train stations was generally good. 3 star rooms varied greatly, from very good to average. Sizes of rooms varied the most. Bathrooms were generally newly refurbished.
- GEGérardJul 9, 2023I strongly recommendFor these last weeks (may, June 2023) I traveled alone in China. I strongly recommend to go through the Travel China Guide Tours internet site to book your train e-ticket. It is the easiest and fastest way to do it. If you have any problems you can contact them, they speak English, they are understanding. With them you can easily change or cancel your bookings. Thanks to them my trip was easy to organise day to day.
- PaulSep 28, 2022Tour of Xi'an and Terracotta ArmyA highly enjoyable one-day tour of the Terracotta warriors and Xi'an City walls, as well as the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Muslim Quarter. Everything was taken care of, and Susan was an excellent, thoughtful and knowledgeable guide.
- Bob V.2 reviewsJan 06, 2020Excellent trip with Travel China GuideGreat experience! Guides were very knowledgeable, friendly and were outstanding communicators. Itinerary was followed expertly. Tour was well organized with a variety of experiences and attractions. One highlight was the home-cooked lunch in a Chinese family's apartment. Very nice lady and a fabulous cook! Other experiences, choice of hotels and restaurants were all first rate. A couple that I wasn't too excited about in advance turned out to be fun and informative beating my expectations. My tour was a great way to learn about China's past and present! Very pleased with my trip!

We found our two guides helpful and prepared to do extra (even wrote out some helpful Chinese for us) and were patient with our varied tour group. We were very comfortable with our dining and accommodation. The tour buses were comfortable and the drivers unintrusive. There were some surprises including the chair lift to the Great Wall and the Kung Fu Show. A nice "surprise" in Xián was the Tang dynasty music and dance show after a dumpling meal! Tai Chi and other activities in the City Wall Park were wonderful. I'll have to go back as I didn't quite master the use of chopsticks but we foreigners were usually provided with forks. When it came time to say Goodbye we were taken to a convenient spot for transport to the train station. Thank you Travel China Guide Tours for everything.

As neither of us had travelled in the "Far East" before, had little knowledge of China, and did not speak Mandarin, we thought it sensible to have tour guides from a company familiar with the country I am glad we did! Our itinerary was carefully planned, and went fully according to plan. Our tour coordinator, Vera Yu, assisted us with the itinerary, paperwork and documentation for arrival in Beijing, and even arranged to meet us in Xi'an.
The tour was magnificent, although strenuous for me as a senior, and covered many of the sites and cities we had heard of over the years. Hotels were beyond our expectations, and cheap, from what we experienced in North America. Hotel meals were generally excellent but we preferred to eat in local cafes; this was much cheaper and not at all difficult as most cafes had pictures of their menus posted outside, and staff were always helpful. In fact we were sometimes overwhelmed with how friendly and helpful Chinese people are.
On the Yangste cruise, where we were the only Westerners, several crew members spoke some English, and the public announcements were often repeated in English or the benefit of non-Mandarin speakers. This cruise was spectacular giving much insight into daily life in China, and culminating in the magnificent 3-Gorges Dam.
In Shanghai we went on our own with a bus tour of the city, a river cruise, and walking.I must add that I felt safer walking a night in Shanghai than I have felt in many North American cities. The Shanghai Bund (river walk), night lights on the Huangou river, and the Shanghai tower should be on everyone's bucket list.
I just wish we had more time available!Collapse
