Saheliyon Ki Bari, Udaipur

On the way to Ahar, there is a famous and beautiful garden lying beside the road - Saheliyon Ki Bari. Saheliyon Ki Bari also has nicknames as Gardens of the Maidens, or Courtyard of the Maidens because it was built for 48 maidens of the Queen. Built in 1710and located on the bank of Fateh Sagar, 100 kilometers north of Udaipur, Saheliyon Ki Bari is full of coconut palms, lush lawns and blossoming flowers, providing tourists with a paradise to be refreshed and relaxed. Keeping an area full of green is quite difficult in Rajasthan, where water is extremely needed. Saheliyon Ki Bari is a magical and ecological paradise for tourists.

Why was Saheliyon Ki Bari built?

From the nickname Gardens of the Maidens, it is easy to understand the meaning and the function of Saheliyon Ki Bari. Legend has it that Indian King Maharana Sangram Singh designed this beautiful garden personally for the 48 maidens of a queen. Therefore, this garden also gained the name of Gardens of the Maidens.

Saheliyon Ki Bari is famous for its fountains, pools and pavilions. With a large area of green area, Saheliyon Ki Bari creates a perfect ecological paradise for tourists. To sum up, there are 4 specific highlights in the garden.

Square Pool at the center
In the center of Saheliyon Ki Bari exists a square pool made by white marble. There stands a white marble pavilion with vaulted roof in the middle of the pool. And in the middle of the pavilion stands a statue of a young girl. Continuous trickle of water flow from the four corners of the pavilion. Besides, 4 black marble pavilions are also constructed around the four corners. Waterfowls are carved on the top of the pavilion with fresh water flowing out from their mouths.

Round Pool in the west
In the west part of Saheliyon Ki Bari exists a bigger round fountain with water hyacinth and lotus growing inside. In the middle part of the pool is a triple-decker fountains with several lions carving under the bottom and kinds of waterfowls carved on the upper two deckers. Also trickle of water would flow out from their mouths. Different from the square pool in the center, 4 white marble elephants on the 4 corners spray water from their noses simultaneously.

Palm Garden
Palm Garden is regarded as the most impressive site for tourists having traveled already. It is said that the King planted palm garden to please his queen. Because the queen enjoys the sound of rains, therefore, the King circled a patch of land and planted palms. When water falls down the leaves, it will creates the sound of raining.

Different Sound created by each canal
Water used in the garden fountains is drawn from the nearby lake Fateh Sagar. It is said that each canal creates a unique sound. The garden will be more romantic with the combination of the sounds from several canals together. What’s more, there is a small royal museum in the garden, representing some royal articles and ancient drawings, which makes the garden mysterious and attractive.   

How to get to Saheliyon Ki Bari

Located 100 kilometers north of Udaipur, passenger need to drive there. It will takes about 3.5 hours to travel on the winding mountain road.
