Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, or KRS Dam as it is better known as, is a major tourist attraction in Mysore, Karnataka. It is also an important source of drinking water supplied to the nearby cities – Mysore and Bangalore. Krishna Raja Sagara Dam – An Overview

One of the most famous tourist attractions of the city Mysore (Mysuru) is Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, or the KRS Dam. It was named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV of Mysore, the major contributor during the creation of this dam, in terms of finance. It was built by the Chief Engineer of Mysore M. Visvesvaraya who came up with a blueprint of the dam to be built near the Kannambadi Village. With walls measuring a length of 2,621 metres (8,600 feet) and a height of 39 metres (128 feet), the dam has a reservoir with a huge area of 130 square kilometres (32,123 acres). History of Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, Mysore

Legends say that the place where the dam stands today is where a sage called Kanva used to live. Kanva was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, and used to be a frequent visitor of the Kanveshvara Temple. Hence, the place has been named after him and is called Kanvapuri.

The Shiva Temple called Kanveshvara Temple that once was there at the same spot was sunken under water once the dam was completed.

The dam is also known by the name of “Kannambadi Katte” as the local residents call it. The Kanveshvara Temple was located in the Kannambadi village where the dam is constructed now and from which the local name was derived. The small village also got submerged in the water once the dam was completely built.
