An artificial lake located in Powai valley in the suburbs of Mumbai, Powai Lake is a beautiful picturesque and a popular spot to visit for people in and around Mumbai. But for the past few years, Powai Lake Mumbai has shown signs of degradation. Many measures are being carried out by the government to preserve this lake.

History of Powai Lake Mumbai

Once upon a time, Powai Lake played a huge role in supplying drinking water to the citizens of Mumbai but later due to industrialization, the quality of the water is not the same now, as some minor parts of Powai lake have degraded now. The area around the lake has developed with many tall buildings around the lake, mostly apartments and offices.

During the British regime, it cost around Rs. 650,000 to construct the lake in 1889. An ancient Padmavati Devi temple was also built on the banks of Powai Lake. And according to the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), the temple is from the 10th century AD.

Powai was once a village.

Before becoming a part of Mumbai, Powai valley was actually a village during the British era. Powai Lake was built by the British in mid-19th century across Mithi Dam. The lake was created to store the pure water of the Mithi for drinking. The water was taken care of by the locals of Powai village during the 20th century, but industrialization has caused huge damage to the lake, however, the government has taken measures to protect it.

Boating is available in Powai Lake, which is a major tourist attraction. Most of the tourists are unaware of the fact that boating is actually available in Powai Lake. Visiting the lake in summer and the rainy season is a disadvantage. During summer the water level is low, while during the rainy seasons, heavy rains in Mumbai play a spoilsport. Hence visiting the Lake in winter is the best-suited option for tourists.

Flora and Fauna

Many species of birds, ducks, and flowers are found around the beautiful Powai Lake Mumbai. Whistling ducks, falcons, butterflies, beetles, etc. are often found around the lake. Balam bushes in their full bloom in pink and purple color are also spotted around Powai valley. The only disadvantage here at Powai Lake is that there are many crocodiles spotted around the valley.

Some of the most popular activities here are go-karting, paintball, dashing car, and snooker. Located in Powai Plaza, this place is perfect for tourists visiting Powai Lake.

Hakone Entertainment Centre is open every day of the week from 2:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

• Hiranandani Complex

Hiranandani Complex is the most luxurious building in Mumbai, located around 3km (1.9mi) away from Powai Lake, which is a must-visit place near the Powai Lake Mumbai. Tourists visit this luxurious building to experience the unique architecture. Its location has increased its popularity. There are many shopping centers and restaurants in the building.

• Clicking Pictures

Clicking pictures at Powai Lake, especially in the evening is the best thing to do. There are photographers available for those who love to have a photoshoot. Powai Lake Mumbai is the perfect spot to click pictures and capture the sunset. The best place to click the picture of the lake is from the top of the Hiranandani building near the Powai Lake, where the photographers can get a complete view of the city and lake.

• The Galleria

Galleria is a nice place for shoppers, where various branded and unbranded items are available at a discount. Located just around 2.5km (1.6mi) away from Powai Lake, this mall is a shoppers’ favorite in Mumbai. Shopaholics will have a great time here in this mall, also a movie theatre is available in case if you have extra time. It is a great place to have fun with friends and family.

• Powai Garden

Powai Garden is just 40km (24.9mi) away from the downtown of Mumbai and is a great place to visit for a day picnic with family. The park is also called Nirvana Park for the peace of mind it provides. The garden, maintained by Mumbai Municipal Corporation, is home to various rare species of fauna. The park is also famous for morning walks. Visitors can also spot fish in the pond which is situated in the garden. There is a play area for kids present in the park. There is no entry fees to visit the garden.

How to reach Powai Lake Mumbai?

From Mumbai Airport, Powai Lake is almost 6km (3.7mi) away. The quickest way to reach this beautiful lake is by hiring a taxi that will take only 30 minutes from the airport, or you can book an auto rickshaw.

You can also take a bus from the Domestic Airport Junction to Powai via Andheri Station. The journey by bus will take almost 55 minutes and the fare would be around Rs. 100.

And if you’re planning to visit Powai Lake Mumbai, the best time would be during the winters when Mumbai’s weather is cool, a little bit dry but pleasant. The months between November and February are the most favorable.
