Marine Drive, Mumbai

Marine Drive, a 3.5-kilometer-long road in the southern district of Mumbai, is a great place to relax, to enjoy sunset, and it also attracts lots of tourists, especially in the evening. It has an official name, called “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road”, however, it is not commonly used. When night falls, if viewed from a higher place, the winding road would look like a shining necklace set in the seaside; therefore, it gains the reputation of “the queen’s necklace” because Mumbai is known as the “queen’s city”.

A Seaside Road Known as “Queen’s Necklace”

Facing the Arabian Sea, Marine Drive runs from Chowpatty Beach in the north to Nariman Point in the south. It looks like a crescent moon setting on the beautiful beach, and is also the most popular place for walking and relaxing in Mumbai. The two sides of the road present two completely different scenery. On one side is a building cluster up to 20 or 30 storeys high, forming a man-made cliff; on the other side lies the endless and sparkling Arabian Sea. The one side with high buildings is a bustling business district, full of shops, restaurants and vendors. When the sun goes down and heat fades away, Marine Drive begins to bustle with people for dating, strolling... At night, dotted with lights, the road turns to be “the necklace of the queen” if looking down from the Malabar Hill.

2. Passengers can take bus 103, 106, 107, 108, and 123 to get to Marine Drive station, then walk to the seaside.
3. From Gateway of India and Taj Mahal Hotel, passengers can walk there.
