Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

Banaras Hindu University, BHU for short, is a public central university situated in Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh, India. Built in 1916, Banaras Hindu University was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya, a famous pandit. The main campus of Banaras Hindu University covers an area of 1,300 acres and is considered as the largest residential university in Asia. Banaras Hindu University has 4 research institutes, 14 colleges, and more than 140 departments. Among all its faculties, Indian Institute of Technology, Faculty of Science, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of News & Mass Media, Department of Performing Arts, Department of Law, College of Agriculture, Medical College, and Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development rank first in India. Banaras Hindu University is particularly proud of its School of Engineering which became part of Indian Institute of Technology. People rich or poor can receive education equally here.

Why Banaras Hindu University was built

At the beginning of 20th century, Hindus were aware of their national consciousness. In 1905, the proposal to raise funds for the establishment of institutions studying Indian national cultures comprehensively was passed. Therefore, in 1916, Banaras Hindu University was built. From then on, people, rich or poor, can receive education equally.

Bharat Kala Bhawan             

Situated inside Banaras Hindu University, Bharat Kala Bhawan with elegant architecture is small, but it collects many exquisite carvings, sculptures, and paintings. 50 rupees per tourist is charged at Bharat Kala Bhawan. Timing for Bharat Kala Bhawan is 10:00 - 16:30 from July - April, and 7:30 - 12: 30 from May to June.   


New Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple  

Different from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple situated in the alley near Man Mandir Ghat, the New Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Banaras Hindu University is newly built to allow more people and devotees worship and it allows tourists enter freely. Exquisite wall paintings can be seen inside the temple. Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Banaras Hindu University is white and not gilded. People with any belief and caste are all welcomed here.

1. Passengers can take buses and get off at BHU bus stop.
2. Passengers can also take tuk-tuk to Banaras Hindu University.
3. Passengers can take buses and get off at Sunbeam bus station, then walk west for about 600 meters (660 yards) to get to the university
