Japan Weather in August

August brings high temperatures to most regions of Japan except Hokkaido, with daytime highs often reaching around 30-35°C (86-95°F). Precipitation is moderate overall, primarily brought by the relatively frequent typhoons this month. The weather of Japan remains humid, leading to a muggy and oppressive feel in many cities. However, August is the best time to visit Japan to admire stunning fireworks festivals.

The Hottest Month throughout the Year

Although it is the end of summer, August is the hottest month in Japan.

Northern Japan is the only region that doesn’t experience extreme heat this month. Take Sapporo in Hokkaido as an example: daily highs range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77-86 degrees Fahrenheit) this month, mostly hovering around 23-28°C (73-82°F), while daily lows typically stay around 20°C (68°F). This indicates very comfortable mornings and evenings, and only slightly hot daytimes.

In central regions like Tokyo, Tokyo, and Osaka, you will feel uncomfortably hot in August. Daily highs generally hover around 35°C (95°F), while lows typically stay about 25°C (77°F). Once the sun rises in these areas, temperatures climb rapidly: on some days, they reach 30°C (86°F) as early as around 07:00. Compounding the discomfort, the apparent temperatures are usually even higher, making long-term outdoor activities highly unpleasant, especially during midday.

Southern cities like Okinawa are also quite hot, with temperatures ranging from 27 to 32°C (81-90°F) almost every day. On the bright side, however, the sea temperature here reaches around 29°C (84°F) this month, very warm for water activities.

Peak Typhoon Season in Japan with Moderate Rainfall

Overall, August is not a particularly rainy month in Japan, as the rainy season has already ended by this time. Generally, most regions in Japan only experience occasional showers this month and see many sunny days.

However, it’s important to note that August, especially the second half of August, is peak typhoon season in Japan. Data shows that Japan experiences an average of 5 to 6 typhoons during this month. All cities may be hit by typhoons, though those in the southern and central regions face a higher risk. When a typhoon strikes, affected cities are highly likely to see intense rainfall. During such events, Shinkansen may suspend service, flights could be delayed or canceled, and your travel plans may be disrupted as a result.

The humidity remains above 70% on average this month in most regions, contributing to the muggy weather, particularly in cities with high temperatures, such as Tokyo.

Daylight Hours/Sunshine Hours

In August, daylight hours in Japan gradually shorten. At the beginning of the month, southern regions like Okinawa, central areas such as Tokyo, and northern locations including Hokkaido experience approximately 13.5 hours, 14 hours, and 14.5 hours of daylight, respectively. By month’s end, daytime in these areas all shortens to around 13 hours. Generally, the time is still enough for a relatively leisurely trip. Visitors planning to watch the sunset over Mount Fuji from places like Kamakura’s coast should note that by the month’s end, sunset occurs earlier at around 18:00.

This month, most cities are enjoying 5-7 sunshine hours per day on average, thanks to the not-so-much rain, ranking one of the longest levels all year round. Except for Hokkaido, you will find the sun quite intense everywhere - the UV index peaks at 10 in these cities.

Should I Visit Japan in August?

In reality, August in Japan has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Whether you choose to travel to Japan during this time depends entirely on your preferences and tolerance for the weather. To help you make a decision, the following lists the cons and pros of traveling to Japan in August in detail:

Cons:

1. Except for Hokkaido, a popular summer retreat, most other cities will subject you to scorching weather. When you venture out during sunny daytime hours, you will inevitably endure the feeling of being drenched in sweat.
2. You may encounter typhoons during your visit. This could not only disrupt your visit but also force you to stay in Japan longer than planned.
3. August coincides with summer vacation and sees larger crowds in Japan, meaning that: you will wait in long queues in sweltering heat to enter some attractions or restaurants, crowds may obstruct your view of sights, and prices of accommodation and air tickets will be significantly higher than usual. These phenomena become even more pronounced during the Obon Festival in mid-August, a major Japanese public holiday.

Pros:

1. August has spectacular and romantic fireworks festivals nationwide, where thousands of colorful fireworks light up the sky. The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, which will be held on August 2-3, 2026, is particularly renowned.
2. This month also features numerous lively and unique summer festivals offering immersive experiences of traditional Japanese culture. For instance, the Aomori Nebuta Festival, held annually from August 2-7, draws large crowds. During the festival, massive lanterns parade through the streets nightly.
3. Hokkaido in August serves not only as a summer retreat but also as an ideal destination to observe sperm whales and dolphins.

Dressing Code for Visiting Japan in August

Japan August Clothes
Clothes: During August with the hottest climate of Japan, males can wear breathable and quick-dry T-shirts or short shirts plus thin long pants or shorts, while females can wear dresses or tank tops plus skirts. However, when going out, you are also recommended to bring a long-sleeved shirt or a thin jacket, which will be quite useful on the Shinkansen trains or some indoor venues where air conditioning is available. During some cool nights in Hokkaido, these long-sleeved clothes are also necessary.

Shoes: Any type of thin and breathable flats, including sandals and sneakers, are OK for trips to Japan in August. However, they are best to be non-slip, so as to keep you safe on rainy days.

 Accessories:
1. For possible thundershowers, you are recommended to put a portable umbrella or raincoat in your pack.

2. Sunglasses, sunhat, and high SPF sunscreen are essential for sun protection.

Tips for Visiting Japan in August

1. As mentioned above, Japan will be extremely crowded during the Obon Festival from August 13 to 16, 2026. It is highly recommended that you avoid traveling to Japan during this period. If you have already decided to visit the country during this time, remember to book your hotel and flights and make reservations for popular attractions in advance.

2. For a more comfortable trip in hot August, you are advised to arrange outdoor visits to cooler morning or evening hours and rest or visit some indoor museums during the hottest midday. Additionally, stay hydrated throughout your travels to prevent heatstroke.
3. As this month is peak typhoon season, monitor weather forecasts closely, so that you can adjust your itinerary promptly if typhoons are forecasted.
