Hoi An Weather in October

The weather of Hoi An during October becomes gently hot, yet it is far from ideal to travel there. It comes with strong UV radiation, heavy and frequent downpours, high humidity, and marks the peak typhoon season of the year. Overall, a trip to Hoi An in this month is not recommended.

From Hot to Mild

Hoi An climate in October is not oppressive, with temperatures settling at relatively pleasant levels.

In the first half of October, Hoi An retains some lingering heat, with daytime highs mostly between 30 - 32 degrees Celsius (86 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit) and nighttime lows steady at 24 - 26℃ (75 - 79℉). Even walking through the unshaded streets of the ancient town under bright sun, you will hardly be drenched in sweat - a cold drink is enough to ease any mild heat. Mornings and evenings are much more comfortable, and you can sleep soundly even in old, non-air-conditioned homestays.

In the second half of October, temperatures drop further, with daytime highs roughly falling below 30℃ (86℉) and nighttime lows dipping under 24℃ (75℉). Midday sunbathing on the beach is pleasantly warm, with no harsh or burning heat. As night falls, glide along the Thu Bon River in a small wooden boat to admire the lanterns, while evening breezes brush over you and bring a refreshing coolness.

Rainiest Climate of the Year

In October, cold air from the north collides with warm, moist air from the south over Hoi An, bringing extremely high rainfall. The town records an average monthly precipitation of 526 mm across roughly 15 rainy days, making it the rainiest period of the year.

Rainfall this month has two key characteristics: it tends to last a long time, often falling nonstop throughout the day, and it comes down heavily, mostly as moderate to heavy rain. Such persistent downpours can easily ruin your outdoor sightseeing plans and stuck you indoors for long stretches.

What’s particularly alarming is that extreme downpours can easily trigger severe flooding. In late October 2025, Hoi An was hit by a record-breaking torrential rainstorm in Vietnam’s history. The heavy rain persisted for days, with single-day rainfall exceeding 1,000 mm - nearly equal to New York City’s annual total precipitation. The flooding submerged large parts of Hoi An Ancient Town, with many rooms filled with water up to the rooftops. Stranded tourists had to be evacuated urgently by boat.

Occasional Typhoon

In October, Hoi An enters its peak typhoon season, usually with 1 - 2 typhoons landing or passing by. Typhoons bring extreme gusts of 8 - 12 on the Beaufort scale, damaging infrastructures and paralyzing transportation. They also bring intense rainfall that often causes flooding and river backflow across the ancient town. During this time, attractions close, roads are blocked, and flights are widely canceled, influencing the travel plans a lot. This period is highly unsuitable for tourism.

Insufficient Daytime for Sightseeing

In October, daylight in Hoi An shortens to less than 12 hours, with sunrise at around 5:39 and sunset at roughly 17:26, so the days are not particularly long. What’s worse, frequent and persistent downpours drastically cut down the effective time for outdoor sightseeing. If unlucky, you may even be trapped in your hotel all day, unable to make any outdoor plans.

Moreover, even though Hoi An’s climate in October is often cloudy and rainy, UV levels remain extremely high, reaching Level 11. Therefore, when heading to unshaded sites like the My Son Sanctuary, make sure to apply full sun protection measures. Do not take it lightly just because direct sunlight is not visible.

Is October Really Not a Good Time to Visit Hoi An?

October is undoubtedly not an ideal time to visit Hoi An. The weather of Hoi An in October is harsh, so nearly all outdoor activities are seriously affected. To begin with, the town’s most iconic ancient town is highly prone to flooding and infrastructure damage caused by heavy downpours and typhoons, which often leads to the closure of the attractions. In the second place, the distinctive Thu Bon River often sees surging water levels and turbulent currents, making boat rides and lantern releases unavailable. Furthermore, the rice harvest has been long over; the picturesque pastoral scenery has vanished, leaving only messy, bare fields.

If there is any upside to visiting Hoi An during this period, it is that it’s the low tourist season. Flights tickets and accommodation are nearly at their lowest prices of the year, making for outstanding value. By closely monitoring weather forecasts and steering clear of extreme weather, you can plan a highly cost-effective trip.

Recommended Outfits for a Hoi An Tour in October

Hoi An October Clothes
Clothes: We recommend dressing flexibly according to the specific climate conditions of Hoi An in October. During the day, you can mainly wear short‑sleeved T‑shirts, cotton-linen shirts, tank tops, dresses, shorts, or thin pants. As it is cooler in the early morning and evening, you may add a thin jacket to stay comfortable in the gentle breeze. Since sudden heavy downpours are frequent at this time, choose quick‑drying or waterproof fabrics whenever possible, to avoid discomfort from wet clothes sticking to your skin for too long.

Shoes: When it’s not raining, you can wear lightweight, breathable sneakers or hiking shoes. When it rains or is right after rainfall, opt for non-slip water shoes or sports sandals.

Others: Umbrella, raincoat, sunscreen, sun hat, and mosquito repellent.

Tips

1. Hoi An’ climate in October features frequent heavy downpours and potential typhoons, which can easily disrupt your travel plans and stop you from visiting as scheduled. Therefore, we strongly recommend booking tickets and accommodations that support free cancellation and flexible date changes. Meanwhile, prioritize accommodations located in higher-elevation areas and avoid low-lying zones along the Thu Bon River, to minimize the risk of flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

2. The coast areas during this period experience strong winds and rough seas with high safety risks, so you should avoid arranging beach boat trips, offshore activities, or snorkeling tours.

3. Showers in October become increasingly common during the afternoon hours. We recommend scheduling outdoor activities such as strolling in the ancient town and beach sunbathing in the morning, while setting aside afternoons for indoor leisure experiences like enjoying coffee, making handicrafts, and tasting local delicacies.
