Algeria Weather in May

As the last month of spring, May in Algeria sees overall trend of temperature rise and precipitation decrease. But Algeria weather in May is of regional differences: the north and central are warm and cozy in general with moderate rainfall, but the south is quite hot and dry. However, sunshine is abundant throughout the whole country. What’s more, the grand festival Eid-al Adha is on May 16 in 2027. All the above favorable conditions collectively contribute to list May as a good time to visit northern and central Algeria.

Warm North, Hot South

In May, temperatures rise across the country, though regional variations remain pronounced: northern Algeria sees very limited temperature increase, while that in the south and central is significant.

In detail, the temperatures in northern Algiers swing around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) during daytime and around 17°C (63°F) at night - a pleasant level for sightseeing.

Contrary to the overall stable temperatures along northern coastlands, the central part experience more fluctuations as the daily highs range from 21 to 30°C (70 - 86°F) and low values 12 - 17°C (54 - 63°F), which brings the central part warm days and cool nights. For occasional days, the max degrees rise to around 32°C (90°F), thus making the middays a little hot.

While, the temperature rises largely and obviously in southern desert areas. For instance, Djanet has the daytime high temperatures mostly fluctuating between 30 and 38°C (86 - 100°F), and the night lows between 20 and 28°C (°F), telling visitors that the weather of southern Algeria in May is pretty hot. In Timimoun, high temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) and low degrees over 25°C (77°F) could be commonly seen in the late May and the day becomes burning hot.

Precipitation: Significant Decrease

As the local rainy season ends, the precipitation in northern Algeria undergoes a significant drop. Take Annaba, one of the rainiest cities in the north, as the example, the average rainfall in May is only 39 mm (1.54 in), belonging to the yearly low level. The monthly precipitation in central areas in May is at its moderate level, about 35 mm (1.38 in) on average. Whereas, the vast south receives quite scarce precipitation in this month, ranging from 2 to 7 mm (0.08 - 0.28 in) in different cities, so the southern Algeria climate in May is drought.

There are about 7 days with some rainfall in the central and northern Algeria, but the precipitation intensity in May is actually low. It mostly falls as brief and light rain in forms of drizzles and showers, wetting the ground slightly and leaving almost no accumulated rainwater. Therefore, it is no need for visitors to worry much about the rainy weather’s negative impact on the schedule.

Daylight / Sunlight: Increasingly Abundant and Strong

Throughout May, as the sun rises earlier at about 6:10 - 5:30 and sets later at 19:00 - 20:00 around, the daylight hours in Algeria increase a lot and most cities enjoy an average daylength over 13 hours. In northmost Algiers, the daytime could even stretch to 14.5 hours by the end of May. The sufficient day time means visitors can explore the vast landscape in depth but without hurry.

Despite of the long daytime, the central and northern parts witness average sunlight duration about 9 - 10 hours per day; while, that of southern cities is about 11 hours long. While the sunny Algeria climate in May provides great conditions for photography, it also implies strong ultraviolet rays. The UV index in most southern desert areas has reached an unbearably high level over 11 so that you have to protect every inch of your skin from it. Other parts see high UV index at the level 8 - 9, where sunproof measures are also necessary.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Algeria?

Well, it depends on your destinations. May is a good time to visit northern and central Algeria since the two parts enjoys favorable weather conditions. The pleasant temperatures make visitors feel like in a naturally air-conditioned room. With the gentle breeze from the Mediterranean, you could hardly sweat even after long-time walking along Algiers Port. Meanwhile, rainfall decreases and more sunny days further add charms to cultural and natural views like Timgad Roman Site and magnificent cliffs in Constantine.

However, it is not advisable to visit most southern desert areas in this month mainly because of the intense heat and sunlight. Visitors might easily get sunburnt and sunstroke in the vast Sahara with little shelters; with even higher ground and perceived temperatures, you could be drenched in sweat after having fun only in a while.

Packing Lists for Algeria Trip in May

Upper body: In the north and central, a single layer of T-shirts or long-sleeved ones work well at sunny middays; for nights in mountain areas, you are suggested to put on jackets or trench coats for warmth. The same is true for the south, but remember to wear thin sunscreen coats or arm-cooling sleeves under bright sunlight.

Lower body: Common trousers like loose jeans and sweatpants are suitable in most time and most cities. In hot days, choose thinner ones; or, boys can wear shorts and girls wear dress long enough to cover the knees in urban areas.
