The Cultural Triangle

Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy consists of the cultural triangle, which is the center of Sri Lanka’s culture and art. All of them were listed in the World Heritage Site. It is a must-go destination if you want to visit the magnificent religious architectures, feel exotic ethnic customs and realize the history of Sri Lanka.

Besides the temples of the cultural triangle, there are other great relics worth visiting. For example, Thuparama Dagaba, it is recorded that Buddha’s clavicle relic is enshrined in this stupa. The stone carving around the stupa is very elegant and is protect well by Buddhists.
Gangaramaya Temple combines the architectural features of Sri Lanka, India and China. It is said that one of the precious collections of this temple is Buddha’s hair. You can visit the museum in here.

Anuradhapura

It is the oldest city and the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Numerous temples and stupas can be seen everywhere.
Runwanwelisaya Stupa is the most preserved-well stupa in the ancient city. People can see a marvelous water-droplet shape of stupa with many carved rocks around it. You need to take shoes off to enter the inside.
Abhayagiri Dagoba is the tallest stupa in the ancient city. It is not only a temple complex, but also represents a symbolic meaning of religious denomination. You can visit Image House, Chapter House, Assembly Halls and monk living areas.
Sri Maha Bodhi Tree Temple is another meaningful spot to go. It is famed for a holy Bodhi tree with a history of 2,300 years. Every morning, large numbers of believers gather here to recite prayers.

Udawattekele Sanctuary

Located on the north of Kandy, it is a beautiful nature conservation area. Udawattekele Sanctuary is known for the abundant bird species and has many mammals; you can also watch the diverse flora. It is a tranquil nature reserve with few tourists. Many Buddhists come here for meditation.

Knuckles Mountain Range

It is shrouded in thick clouds all year round. In addition to the magnificent natural scenery, it also has important scientific value because you can feel any Sri Lanka’s climate form in here. This area is rich in biodiversity that trekking lovers and biological enthusiasts can watch diverse flora and fauna species.
