Top Attractions to Visit in Nara in September

Travel Recommendation:

1. Uneme Shrine - Uneme Festival

Every year in late September, the Uneme Shrine, which is the subordinate shrine of the Kasuga Taisha Shrine, holds the Uneme Festival to pray for the blessings for people. This festival includes the procession of flower fans, and boat precession with lanterns and music. The most marvelous part is in the end of the ceremony. With the whole Sarusawa-ike pond being lit up by the lanterns and two dragon ships floating on the pond, people throw the flower fans into the water and the ceremony ends in a romantic atmosphere.

Tip: While enjoying the lively atmosphere of the Uneme Festival, please keep a safe distance with the Sarusawa-ike pond.

2. Katsuragi-Hitokotonushi Shrine

In mid and late September, the higanbana, known as red spider lily, is in full bloom in Katsuragi-Hitokotonushi Shrine. What’s more, the Katsuragi-Hitokotonushi Shrine is well-known for a ginkgo tree with a history of more than 1,200 years. Visitors can appreciate not only the red higanbana and aged ginkgo tree, but also the gold rice and green terraced fields in the distance.

Tip: The higanbana is poisonous. If you touch the sap of the higanbana accidentally, please wash your hands timely.

3. Hannya-ji Temple

Except the higanbana, the cosmos is also worth seeing in September. Because the scene of blooming cosmos is as spectacular as the blooming sakura in spring, the cosmos is also called autumn sakura in Japan. The most famous place to appreciate the cosmos in Nara is the Hannya-ji Temple.
