Narita International Airport

  Location: nearly 64km (40 miles) east to Tokyo downtown, Narita, Chiba Prefecture

Narita International Airport, opened since May in 1978, is the major airport to reach and leave from Tokyo, Japan. In addition to domestic flights to and from 16 cities around Japan, there are also international flights from and to 99 cities in 40 countries or regions on the globe, except Latin America. It is also one of the top airports in Japan.

There are 3 terminals in Narita International Airport, which share the function to transport passengers with multiple departure halls, arrival halls, lounges, quarantine areas, and the leisure areas. Terminal 1 is the oldest as well as largest terminal there, with 5 satellite halls, 80 boarding bridges and 40 parking bays for planes.

Terminal 2 receive and deliver numerous passengers as well, with 61 boarding bridges and 32 parking bays. As for the smallest Terminal 3, it is the terminal for budget airlines. Although there are only 6 boarding bridges and 11 parking bays, T3 is also busy every day.

Shuttle Buses around Terminals

The shuttle buses go around all the 3 terminals follow the route: T1 - T3 - T2 - T1. There are also shuttle buses running between T1 and T2, as well as those between T2 and T3.

It takes 10 minutes to shuttle between T1 and T2, 3 minutes from T3 to T2, 6 minutes from T2 to T3, and 14 minutes from T1 to T3.

Passageway to Rails
There are 5 major railways connecting urban Tokyo and Narita Airport, including Keisei Skyliner, Keisei Access Express, Keisei Main Line, JR Narita Express (written as N’EX in short often), and JR lines. As you can see, these routes are operated by Keisei and JR respectively. JR Narita Express, Keisei Skyliner, and Keisei Access Express are much faster, as it takes about 40 minutes to reach Ueno by Skyliner and 1 hour or so by Access Express. Narita Express takes about 50 minutes to Tokyo Station and 73 minutes to Shinjuku.

Airport Express Buses

The airport express buses of Narita Airport run to and pass by the most spots in Tokyo, as well as farther cities. You can buy a ticket at the bus ticket counters by arrival halls in each terminal. Ginza, Tokyo Station, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Kabukicho, Ikebukuro, Asakusa, Haneda Airport, Tokyo Disney Resort, etc. in Tokyo region can be reached directly. Nikko, Yokohama, Karuizawa, Mt. Fuji/Lake Kawaguchi, and more places are also accessible.

Taxi

It’s easy to get a taxi at the taxi stand of Narita Airport. Both the standard taxies (charged by distance) and the flat-rate taxies can be hailed. A flat-rate taxi costs a specified sum of money between Narita Airport and some ward in Tokyo. The fare is different to different wards. You can choose the taxi type of your preference.

Lounges, Prayer Rooms & Nursing Rooms

Narita International Airport is stocked with multiple lounges. The seating areas called meeting points provide seats, power charging station, and hot/cold water. Narita TraveLounge is the pay lounge on 3F of T1. In addition, the lounges of some airlines are also available, such as ANA (All Nippon Airways), KAL (Korean Air), Cathay Pacific Airways, and JAL (Japan Airlines). Especially, ANA has several lounges in T1.

What’s more, there are prayer rooms on 2F and 5F respectively of T1, 1F of T2, as well as 2F and 3F of T3, for travelers who need to pray, meditate, contemplate silently, or more spiritual activities.

Lactating women will be delighted to find several nursing rooms by the toilets on each floor.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are also convenient for passengers who sit on a wheelchair. More than one accessible toilets can be found on every floor of the terminals. Also, there are some specialized accessible toilets with facilities for ostomates in each terminal.

Currency Exchange & ATMs

Currency exchange houses are situated by the exits of any terminal in Narita Airport, operated by different banks. For example, the currency exchange houses at the exit of North Wing of T1 are of MUFG Bank and Resona Bank, respectively.

ATMs of the major banks in Japan are equipped in the terminals of Narita Airport, mainly distributed in the arrival and departure halls. Meanwhile, there are also self-service money exchange machines by the ATMs usually.

SIM Card, Wifi Rental & More Internet Service

The network service is of course essential in Narita Airport. There are counters and shops of SIM card and pocket Wifi rental of local communications service providers, mainly at the international arrival lobbies. If you see “Telecom Square” on your map, that’s it. Usually, it would be discovered at the international departure hall as well.

Furthermore, the SIM card vending machines are also convenient to get a local SIM card by yourself.

Left Luggage

Apart from the counters with staff to help you to deposit your baggage, in fact, the self-service coin lockers are more common in Narita International Airport. Cafés, snack bars, and restaurants in the terminals, mainly around the departure area, would provide good food for passengers. Diverse cafés like Starbucks, western fast food restaurants like McDonald’s, and many restaurants of Japanese food like sushi are stationed there.

Other More Facilities & Services

  No smoking in the public places. Narita Airport has some smoking areas for smokers, which are usually in a corner of the lobby.
  Two or three AED (automated external defibrillator) is provided on each floor in the terminals. Also, the clinic of Narita Airport offer medical service for passengers as well. The clinic is on the first basement floor of T1 and T2, and there is also a first aid room on 2F, No.5 satellite in T1.
  Kids’ Park offers some seats and the play area for children to gambol. In T1, you can find the kids’ park on 3F, 4F, and 5F.
  If you have some leisure time and are interested in Japanese culture, the Japanese Culture Introduction/Experience Corner on 3F of No.5 satellite of T1 and 2F of T2 may be funny to explore.

Parking Lots

The parking lots are in the middle of T1 and T2 & T3. Parking lots P1 and P5 are near T1, while P2 and P3 are closer to T2. If you arrive at or go to T3, P2 is the closest.
