Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport)

  Location: about 17km (10.6 miles) south to Tokyo downtown; on the left bank of Tamagawa Estuary, Tokyo Bay, Ota Ward, Tokyo

Tokyo International Airport, also called Haneda Airport, is the largest airport as well as an essential transportation hub in Japan. It is also the nearest international airport to the capital city Tokyo, thus becomes a major air hub to undertake the passenger flow in Tokyo except for Narita Airport. Domestic flights to/from 48 cities around the country are operated, while 55 cities in the world can be reached directly. There are 3 major terminals with more than 70 parking bays.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 of Haneda Airport is the airport terminal mainly used by Japanese Airlines, such as Japan Airlines (JAL), Skymark Airlines and StarFlyer. It is a 6-storeyed building above ground. 1F is the arrival level, while 2F is the departure level. There are restaurants and shops on 3F and 4F, conference rooms for rent on 5F, and observation decks on 6F and the rooftop. As for the underground floor, you can find the passageway to Keikyu Line, Tokyo Monorail, and T2.

Terminal 2

T2 of Tokyo International Airport is also a terminal building for Japanese airlines like All Nippon Airways (ANA), Air Do, and Skynet Asia Airways. Similarly, it has the domestic arrival level on 1F, domestic departure lobby and international arrival lobby on 2F, international departure lobby on 3F, restaurants and shops on 4F, as well as the observation deck on 5F. On the basement level, there is also the metro station of Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail.

T3, the terminal for international flights at Haneda Airport, has no underground level. There is the entrance plaza with inter-terminal shuttle bus station, bus stops, and taxi stands on the 1F, the arrival level on 2F and departure level on 3F. 4F and 5F are the levels of restaurants and shops, with an observation deck on the top floor as well.

Observation Decks

There is an observation deck on the top floor or the rooftop of each terminal. It’s absolutely great to see the featured scenes of a large airport by sea with your family and friends. In particular, there is a probability to see Mt. Fuji when it’s very clear.

Haneda Airport Shrine

You may be surprised to know that there is a Japanese shrine on 1F of T1. It is somewhat different from other old shrines, constructed in the modernized building with simple traditional decorations. It’s to pray for the safety of air travel as well as the development of aviation industry.

TIAT Sky Road

On 5F of T3, there are many airplane models of the major airlines stationed at the airport on display, together with the photos of staff at Haneda Airport. If you are interested in models of planes, you could go to the passage for a visit.

Go around Terminals

The shuttle bus between each terminal is available for free. There are 4 routes:
  T1 → T2,    T1 → T3,    T2 → T1 → T3, &    T3 → T1 → T2
The first free shuttle bus may depart within 04:15-04:32 am from the terminal, and last bus runs at the corresponding moment of 01:00 am at midnight. It departs every 4 minutes during the day – 05:00-20:00, and every 8 minutes during 20:00-24:00.

Besides, there is a 400-m (437-yard) long pedestrian way underground between T1 and T2.

Travel to/from Haneda Airport

City Trains

Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail Line extend to Haneda Airport. It takes around 15 minutes to reach Shinagawa station, 30 minutes to Tokyo Station, 45 minutes to Shibuya, 50 minutes to Shinjuku, etc.

Spots for Ticketing & Boarding:

  T1 & T2: the first floor underground
  T3: 3F departure hall & 2F arrival hall

Shuttle Bus & Express Bus

Shuttle buses to some spots in Tokyo run almost all day. Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, Kabukicho Tower, Shibuya Station (Mark City), Hachioji Station, Ikebukuro, Asakusa, Odaiba, Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Disney Resort, etc. can be reached, even a few run in the wee hours.

The airport express buses also go to farther places in Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Shizuoka, Yamanashi, and so on.

Taxi

Either the fixed-fare taxi or ordinary taxi charged by distance can be selected. At the taxi stand in T3, you can find the taxies with sticker indicating “English certified driver”, which serve for the oversea passengers specifically.

Cruise

Regular cruise to Yokohama Minato Mirai Pukarisanbashi Pier run from Haneda Airport, JPY 3,500 for a single trip and JPY 4,400 for the round trip per adult. The boats are operated on every Sunday only. In case of a sudden bad weather, the boats would be out of service temporarily.

The pier is on the bank of Tamagawa River, west front of T3. It’s a 15-minute walk from the terminal as well as the metro station of Haneda Airport T3 on Keikyu Line.

Travel between Haneda Airport and Narita Airport

Airport Limousine Bus is a great choice to shuttle between Haneda Airport and Narita Airport. Meanwhile, rail is another way. You can get on Keikyu Line or Monorail Line at Haneda Airport and transfer to Keisei Lines or JR lines to Narita Airport.

Facilities & Services

Lounges

The pay lounges are distributed in the all directions of the departure levels in each terminal, with resting place, dressing room, free or paid drinks and bathroom. JAL has its airline lounge in T1 and T3 respectively, and ANA has also lounges in T2 and T3. Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Air Lines, and more airlines set up their lounges at Haneda Airport, especially in T3.

Currency Exchange & ATMs

Currency exchange counters and self-service machines gather on the departure levels as well as arrival levels. ATMs of various banks can also be easily discovered in Haneda Airport. Especially, Mizuho Bank has a small business shop on 1F of T1 and T3, respectively.

However, the exchange rate at the airport is relatively unfriendly. If you would like a foreign exchange or cash withdrawal, it is suggested to take a small sum at the airport. ATMs are very convenient in the urban areas, and each 7-11 convenience store has an ATM generally.

Left Luggage & Coin Lockers

At Haneda Airport, the left luggage in each terminal provides a baggage storage service for 2 weeks at most, and the fare is charged depending on the size of your baggage. Coin locker is also a useful way to store your baggage at Haneda Airport. Most of coin lockers are set near the boarding gates, the maximum period for the storage is 3 days for those in T1 and T2, while it can be extended to 7 days for those in T3.

Clinics & AED

The medical facilities of AED (automated external defibrillator) are equipped all over the airport, so that you can find one without effort if needed. Meanwhile, emergency telephones of SOS are often installed by the side of AED. What’s more, each terminal has one clinic on the 1F, and even a dental clinic is opened in T1.

WIFI Rental & Mobile Network

If you would like to get a local SIM card or rent a pocket Wifi router, T3 is the best place to find the service centers on the 2F and 3F. Especially on the 2F, there is also a 24-hour automatic rental service in front of Mobile Center. Another counter on 2F is of AnyFone Japan. On 3F, both the counter of XCom Global and the Mobile Center are accessible. T2 also provides such a service at the international arrival and departure lobby respectively, but you can’t find one in T1.

Restaurants & Shopping

A number of restaurants, cafés, izakayas, etc. are stationed at Haneda Airport, as well as convenience stores, grocery stores, and duty-free stores. You may spend the long waiting time to try the Japanese food or enjoy shopping. However, there is no duty-free store in T1, which are all in T2 and T3.

There are 5 parking lots in total in Haneda Airport. The parking lot P5 stand by T3, and other 4 are between T1 and T2.
