Brief History of Dotonbori

Dotonbori takes its name from Yasui Doton, a Japanese merchant in early 17th century. In 1612, Yasui Doton funded and led the excavation of this waterway. Tragically though, he died in battle before the project could be finished. Hence, his relatives stepped in to carry on the construction and completed the Canal in 1615. The district was then named after him to honor his great contributions to the area.

In the Edo period (1603 - 1868), the shogunate, the military-led government that ruled Japan at that time, moved many kabuki and bunraku puppet theaters to this growing waterfront zone. As audiences flocked in from across the region to watch performances, teahouses and casual eateries began to spring up all around the canal, turning Dotonbori gradually into a celebrated entertainment hub across the Kansai region. Over time, most of those historic theaters vanished, and food rose to become the district’s main draw for visitors. When bright illuminated displays and striking three-dimensional shop signs arrived in the 20th century, this former theater quarter slowly transformed into a world-famous tourist destination.

2. Dotonbori remains relatively safe after dark. However, large crowds gather here especially at night, so you are advised to keep personal belongings secure at all times.
3. Some chain restaurants generally support card payments, but most street food stalls accept Japanese yen cash only, so it helps to carry some local currency.
4. When enjoying kushikatsu, you are advised not to dip skewers into the shared sauce a second time.
5. The canal steps sit at different heights from the adjacent walkways, so please take extra care when moving around the area at night.
