Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise

Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise is located on a man-made island at the southern tip of Yokohama city, with two main areas Aqua Resorts and Pleasure Land. Here, you can not only see 50,000 sardines swimming past you, get up close and personal with marine animals such as dolphins, penguins and otters, but also experience various thrilling and fun amusement facilities. It is suitable for both adults and children.

Aqua Resorts

Aqua Resorts at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise houses approximately 700 varieties and 120,000 marine creatures, making it one of the largest aquarium complexes in Japan. It is made up of four main venues, namely Aqua Museum, Dolphin Fantasy, Fureai Lagoon and Umi Farm. 

Aqua Museum

Aqua Museum is the largest and the core part in the entire Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. Here you can enjoy one of the largest sardine group swimming shows in Japan. 50,000 sardines swim across a huge floor-to-ceiling glass water tank that is 8 meters (26 feet) high and about 10 meters (33 feet) wide, just like a vast expanse of flowing silver waves, presenting a spectacular sight. During the performance, 50,000 sardines will synchronize with lights and music, turning, accelerating, rotating, contracting into whirlpools, and then instantly dispersing all at once. Meanwhile, when the light shines on the dense silver fish scales, the entire water tank will glow, and you will feel as if you have fallen into a flowing milky way or an underwater universe. 

In addition, you can enter the 3-story-high underwater tunnel and take the first underwater elevator in Japan, which is about 20 meters (66 feet) long. You will feel completely enveloped by the sea water and schools of fish, as if you were really diving in the deep sea. 

Apart from the marine animal area, there is also an outdoor land animal area, featuring otters, flamingos, and marmots.      

Dolphin Fantasy

Unlike the Aqua Museum which features various marine animals, Dolphin Fantasy focuses more on the healing feeling under natural light and the interaction with dolphins. At the core part of Dolphin Fantasy is a huge arched underwater tunnel, offering a 360° view of dolphins freely playing in the water in natural light. The Dolphin Fantasy is relatively small and it takes about 10-15 minutes to visit. 

Close Interaction with Marine Animals

Fureai Lagoon

Fureai Lagoon is most suitable for visitors who enjoy close interaction with animals. Here, you don’t have to watch through the glass, but can truly step into the lives of marine animals. You can experience feeding dolphins, touching the heads of white whales, and also watch penguins stroll up close. 

Umi Farm

At Umi Farm, you can experience fishing and the fish caught can be taken to the restaurant for free cooking. 

Useful Tips

1.    The sardine show is usually performed at 11:00, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:00 on weekends and holidays, and the schedule on weekdays may change. It is recommended to check in advance or consult the staff when entering the park. The show lasts about 5 minutes each time. 
2.    The sardine show is held at LABO5 large aquarium. It is recommended to get there 10-15 minutes in advance. Standing directly beneath or at a 45-degree angle to the side of the water tank can make you feel the beauty of fish schools to the fullest extent.   
3.    At the Fureai Lagoon, you can queue up for free petting of the animals after the performance. However, feeding and taking photos require additional payment, and it is recommended to make a reservation in advance.  
4.    The entrance fee for fishing experience at Umi Farm is 500 yen (3 USD). An additional charge is required for each fish caught, and it is not allowed to be released.

Pleasure Land

The Pleasure Land features 16 kinds of ocean-themed rides, ranging from thrilling projects to gentle ones. The Coaster Leviathan is the most iconic ride in the Pleasure Land. The track extends directly above the sea and the roller coasters speed on the water, providing an extremely thrilling and romantic experience. You can also experience the free-fall ride where you drop from a height of 107 meters (351 feet) straight down, which is an excellent choice for thrill-seeking tourists. In addition to thrilling projects, there is also a carousel and a 3D maze suitable for children. The Pleasure Land also features a 90-meter-tall (295-feet-tall) rotating observation deck, offering 360-degree views of the Yokohama Bay Bridge, Mount Fuji, and the panoramic landscape of the island, making it a landmark viewing facility in Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.

Useful Tip

It is recommended to visit the Aqua Resorts in the morning and spend the afternoon at the Pleasure Land. Finally, head to the observation deck at dusk to enjoy the night view. This itinerary will be the most fulfilling.

How to Get There

1.    Starting from Yokohama: Take the railway Keikyu Main Line to Kanazawa-hakkei Station. After exiting the station, transfer to the AGT Seaside Line to Hakkeijima Station. There is also a direct bus to Hakkeijima from the east exit of Yokohama Station, suitable for tourists who do not want to transfer frequently. 
2.    Starting from Tokyo: Take the railway JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to Shin-Sugita Station, then transfer to Seaside Line to Hakkeijima Station. After getting off, it takes about 2-5 minutes to walk there. The whole journey takes about 1.5 hours.  

Note: If you are coming from Yokohama, it is recommended to purchase the Hakkeijima Seapara Pass. Hakkeijima Seapara Pass is 3,580 yen (22 USD), including a round-trip ticket for Keikyu Line, a One Day pass for Seaside Line, an Aqua Resorts Pass and a 500-yen (3 USD) voucher for the Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. The Hakkeijima Seapara Pass can be purchased at the automatic ticket vending machines at the stations of Keikyu Line. However, it should be noted that some stations like Haneda Airport Station, Sengakuji Station and Kanazawa-hakkei Station are not available for purchase.
