Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

When coming to Yokohama, Japan, you cannot fail to visit the Red Brick Warehouse. Built from the late Meiji Period (1905-1912) to the early Taisho Period (1912-1915), it was once a bonded warehouse back then. Named for retaining the red brick exterior walls, the Red Brick Warehouse is one of the most recognizable buildings in Yokohama. Now it has been transformed into a cultural landmark, as well as a core stop for relaxing and strolling around in Yokohama. 

From a Century-old Warehouse to a Trendy Landmark

The Red Brick Warehouse, the most advanced warehouse in Japan when built, consists of building one and building two. Building one was the first warehouse in Japan equipped with freight elevators and automatic sprinkler systems. After falling into disuse following World War II, it was renovated and reopened in 2002.

The Souvenir Shops

Building one has a more artistic atmosphere and is mainly used as a space for art and cultural activities. There are some exhibitions on the second and third floor. On the first floor, there are various souvenir shops and coffee shops. You can purchase Huffnagel cookies there, whose package is like a vintage Western antique book and the texture is extremely high-end. You can also purchase Red Brick Warehouse limited edition Gianduja hazelnut chocolate. The crispness of oat cookies combined with specially made thick cream makes the layers distinct when taking a bite. In addition to desserts, you can also purchase Kissora handmade leather goods. They not only look good but also have excellent quality. After visiting the souvenir shops, you can go to any coffee shops there to enjoy your leisure time.

Wander around and Enjoy the Food in Building Two

Building two is larger. You can taste various Yokohama specialties on the first floor and purchase accessories, perfumes, leather goods on the second floor. You can also have meals and buy souvenirs at the Disney-themed restaurant on the third floor. All the shops are full of surprises. You can not only buy the souvenirs for yourself but also give them as a gift to your family and friends.

Brilliant Night View

The lighting of Red Brick Warehouse at dusk is one of the famous night views in Yokohama. At night, the lights cast a warm orange-gold glow on the red bricks, adding an extra layer of beauty to this ancient building. It complements the various neon lights of Minato Mirai 21, conveying the contrast and integration of “the past and present”. You can also enjoy the night view of the whole Minato Mirai 21 and the area around Yamashita Park from Red Brick Warehouse.

Various Activities Throughout the Year

Various fun activities are often held in the square outside the Red Brick Warehouse. 

The Flower Garden event is held from mid-March to mid-June every year. The site will be set up with a flower field of about 1,200 square meters, planted with tens of thousands of flowers, and illuminated at night. It is one of the most romantic spots to visit in Yokohama during spring.

The Christmas Market is held from late November to December 25th every year and it is one of the most popular Christmas Markets in Japan. There are booths of original German wooden houses, mulled wine, a giant Christmas tree and a dazzling corridor of lights. You can ring the bell under the giant Christmas tree, take pictures of red brick walls and European-style wooden houses. You can also enjoy the Christmas sunset and night view, which is very romantic.   

In addition, there are also Puppy Festival, Beer Festival, Bread Festival, Red Brick Sunset and Disco Brick Yokohama hosted at Red Brick Warehouse, which are good choices to experience the vibrant lifestyle of Yokohama.

Opening Hours and Ticket

The opening hours of building one are from 10:00 to 19:00, and of building two are from 11:00 to 20:00. Red Brick Warehouse is free to enter.

How to Get There

1. Take Minatomirai Line to Odori Station. After getting off the station, walk for 6 minutes to get to Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse. 

2. Take JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, Negishi Line or Yokohama Municipal Subway to Sakuragicho Station or Kannai Station. After exiting the station, walk for 10-15 minutes to reach Red Brick Warehouse.

Yokohama Landmark Tower: You can overlook the breathtaking night view of the entire Yokohama from the “Sky Garden” observation deck on the 69th floor. It is one of the core landmarks in Minato Mirai 21.

Yamashita park: Yamashita park is the most iconic seaside park in Yokohama and one of the earliest coastal parks in Japan. Renowned for its leisurely strolling atmosphere and breathtaking harbor views, it is the perfect place to experience Yokohama's distinctive "slow-paced" charm. 

Zou-no-Hana Park: Located between Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal and the Red Brick Warehouse, Zou-no-Hana park features its observation area, grassy slopes, and a walkway extending to the harbor. You can look from the end of the park at the night view of Minato Mirai 21, which is breathtakingly beautiful.
