Temperatures Rise Gradually

Sapporo in March marks the end of winter season. Overall, Sapporo’s weather becomes warmer than previous two freezing months, with average temperature ranging from -2 ~ 5°C (28-41°F). But it still is quite cold, especially in early March, when temperature fluctuates at -9 ~ 0°C (16-32°F). Therefore, it’s advisable to wear thick coat to keep warm.

As the month progresses, there are more sunny days and the temperature gradually rises. Around noon, visitors would feel a bit warmer. However, after the sunset, the temperature can drop quickly. So you are highly recommended to stay indoors at night or wear extra layers to add warmth.

By late March, daytime temperatures often stay above freezing, making it much more pleasant for outdoor activities. As long as your skin is well covered, a sweater layered under a wool coat is usually enough to stay warm.

Snowy and Rainy Weather

Sapporo in March is dominated by frequent light snowfall, with occasional heavy snowfall. Rising temperatures mean the rain begins to show up – particularly in the second half of the month. The average monthly precipitation is around 83 mm, spreading over 12 days, with a mix of snow and rain depending on the daily temperature.

If you plan to see snow-covered cityscapes, the first half of March is better than the second half. Snow accumulation is still thick in early March, in parks and streets around central Sapporo. However, by mid to late March, snow in the city begins to melt quickly due to rising temperatures, and the scenery may become slushy and a bit dirty. However, it’s worth noting that the ice on the streets is difficult to melt down in some areas. Thus, be careful when you walk on.

The good news is that snow conditions remain excellent in the suburbs and ski resorts, especially in higher altitudes, where you can still enjoy pristine snow views and winter sports through the end of March.

Compared with January and February, Sapporo in March experiences relatively longer daylight hours, allowing more time for visiting as many attractions as possible. This extended daylight makes it easier to visit both central downtown and surrounding areas, like Jozankei Gensen Park, where you can enjoy a serene snowy landscape and clean mountain air.

On sunny days, the sunlight helps to alleviate the chill and makes outdoor exploration more comfortable. Snowy surfaces can reflect sunlight intensely, so wearing sunglasses is highly recommended, which is good for protecting your eyes.

Is March a Good Month to Visit Sapporo?

Yes, March is one of the best months to visit Sapporo in 2026. Firstly, March is still in snowy season, receiving considerable snowfall. You don’t have to worry that you might miss the wonderful snow view. Plus, for snow sports lovers, thanks to accumulated snowfall from the previous months, ski resorts and snow parks remain in great conditions. Secondly, in March, Sapporo sees fewer tourists compared with the peak season in January and February. Therefore, you can have a more peaceful and budget-friendly trip.
