Sapporo Weather in January

 Season: Winter
 Overview:
1. Sapporo enjoys a cold and snowy climate in January, so packing warm clothing is essential.
2. Daylight hours are quite short, making it important to plan your trips wisely.
3. Yukitouro is a highlight activity in January, a must-see for visitors.

Coldest Time of the Year

Sapporo in January is the coldest all year round, with average temperature ranging from -7 - -1°C (19-30°F). But don’t worry – it’s not bone-chill cold that you cannot stand. According to the historical data, the lowest temperature this month is about -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). Around noon, the perceived temperature hovers around zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Plus, there are many underpasses leading to major shopping areas, such as Tanukikoji Shopping Street, and they are equipped with heating systems, making it easy to move around the city without feeling freezing.

If you plan to explore the suburban area of Sapporo, like Jozankei Onsen, the southern zone of Sapporo, remember to wear extra layers, as the weather can be colder. For example, the average temperature of Jozankei in January hovers between -10 - -4°C (14-25°F).

However, in recent years, global warming has become more serious, making considerable impacts on Sapporo. For instance, in late January 2025, snowfall in the city center melted earlier than expected. So it’s best to check the weather forecast before your visit.

Snowfall & Deep Snow Depth

Sapporo, well-known for its spectacular snowy landscapes, receives 94 mm of snowfall over 17 snowy days in January, averagely. Snow often arrives suddenly and may come with strong winds, when you may need to wear a face mask or scarf for protection when walking outdoors.

Although the total monthly snowfall is not the highest in winter, it’s a perfect month to appreciate the snow view. Due to its coldest climate and heavy snowfall in December, 136 mm on average, the accumulated snow depth tends to be deeper. This makes January one of the best months for snow scenery and winter sports.

Interestingly, snow in Sapporo often melts quickly when it falls on your body. As a result, many people would take an umbrella with them. But on windy days, it’s best to wear a thick hat to keep your hair dry and your head warm.

Humidity

In winter, cold and dry wind from Siberia sweeps across Hokkaido. Therefore, Sapporo enjoys a relatively low humidity level, averaging about 68% in January. This creates a fresh and crisp winter atmosphere that many visitors find comfortable for outdoor activities, such as snow sports and sightseeing.

Things You Need to Prepare

Sapporo January Clothes
Upper clothes: It’s a good idea to wear thermal underwear as the inner layer and a down liner layer or a fleece-lined hoodie as the middle layer. As for the coat outside, opt for a waterproof down coat or a long wool coat that goes over the knees to keep warm and stylish. A small tip for impressive photos: light color coats are more eye-catching against the snowy background!

Lower clothes: To stay warm and mobile, pair thermal leggings with thick jeans or fleece-lined cargo pants. They are suitable for all activities. Thermal tights layered under a thick winter dress can also be a cozy and stylish option for women.

Footwear: Since much of Sapporo is covered in deep snow during winter, slippery roads and sidewalks are pretty common. It's important to bring non-slip, waterproof boots or high-cut hiking shoes that provide both good grip and insulation to ensure a safe and comfortable walk around the city.

 Accessories:
1. Thick socks are a must – feet tend to get cold easily, especially when you spend extended time outdoors.
2. Gloves, hats, scarves, and earmuffs are not only essential for warmth but also add the winter romantic feeling to your outfit.
3. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses to protect your eyes from harsh sunlight reflected by the pure white background.
4. If you plan to go skiing or snowboarding, don’t forget to pack your own ski gear, such as ski goggles.
