Sapporo Weather in February

 Season: Winter
 Overview
1. Sapporo weather is a bit chilly with much snow in February, so visitors should wear warm clothes.
2. February is one of the best months to visit Sapporo, with stunning snow views and diverse activities. But the cost will be relatively high.
3. One of the travel highlights in February is the Sapporo Snow Festival, a must-visit activity.

Low Temperatures in February

Although February sees a slight rise in temperatures compared to January, Sapporo’s weather remains cold throughout the month, with average temperatures ranging from -7 - 0°C (19-32°F). Toward the end of the month, the temperature may climb to about 4-5°C (39-41°F). However, don’t let the numbers fool you: wind and snow can lead to the perceived temperature of below freezing, and you may still feel cold. If you are from a warmer or tropical area, the cold weather can be a challenge.

That said, midday sunshine can bring some relief, particularly when the skies are clear. For example, at the end of February 2025, the highest temperature during midday can reach 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s a good idea to check the weather forecast daily and adjust your outfit accordingly to stay both warm and comfortable during your trip.

High Snowfall & Crisp Winter Air

Sapporo in February sees plentiful snow, with average precipitation of 81 mm across 14 snowy days. Heavy snow usually arrives with strong winds, which can make extended periods outdoors less comfortable. On such snowy and windy days, it’s best to plan shorter outdoor activities or opt for visiting someplace indoors, like Sapporo Beer Museum and Tanukikoji Shopping Street.

Due to Sapporo’s cold climate, snow continues to accumulate throughout the month, and reaches its deepest levels by late February, about 75 mm. Thus, for those snow lovers, it’s highly recommended to visit Sapporo during this period, and you won’t be disappointed. But be careful when you walk on the snowy roads, as they can be quite slippery.

Winter winds from Siberia not only bring heavy snow, but also help maintain clean, crisp air throughout the city. With an average humidity of 67%, the air is refreshingly dry and comfortable.

Sunshine Hours & Daytime Hours

Sunshine Hours: about 4 hours
Sunrise: 6:12-6:50
Sunset: 16:46-17:22
Daytime Hours: 9 hours 57 minutes – 11 hours 10 minutes

The daylight length is still shorter than 12 hours. So it’s advisable to get up early and go to visit key attractions like Hokkaido Shrine in the morning or early afternoon to avoid a situation where it’s gradually getting dark during your visit.

If you're heading to ski resorts or scenic spots outside the city center, and you have to go back to your hotel downtown, it's wise to wrap up by around 16:00 to ensure enough light and safety for your return trip.

That said, the fun doesn't end when the sun goes down in urban areas, as Sapporo enjoys a colorful nightlife. Not only can you appreciate the snow sculptures with lights, but you can also grab a drink at a cozy local bar.
