Temperature Rising, but Mild Overall

The weather of Nikko is pleasantly mild in June, with the average temperature ranging from 13-22°C (55-72°F), while in nearby Tokyo it is 21-25°C (70-77°F). This makes it a perfect retreat from the city’s early summer heat.

During the first half of June, daytime highs rarely exceed 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), while in the second half, daily high temperatures often reach 25°C (77°F), and on some days climb as high as 28°C (82°F).

However, you may feel a little cold on rainy days, with lows dropping to around 7°C (45°F). Cloudy days are less predictable - sometimes you may feel comfortably mild, sometimes rather brisk and breezy.

In the mountains, it stays cooler. For your information, the average temperatures here are around 10-18°C (50-64°F) in June. If you’re planning to hike in Oku-Nikko, pack an extra warm layer for comfort.

Abundant Rainfall

Nikko in June experiences the rainy season. The monthly precipitation increases sharply to 221 mm, spreading over about 22 days. Most rain comes in the form of short showers of 5-30 mm per day, sometimes followed by fog, which won’t significantly disrupt your plans if you’re prepared well. Instead, dizzying showers nourish the greenery, perfect for nature lovers to explore. Occasionally, heavy downpours occur, with daily rainfall peaking at nearly 90 mm, which is not suitable for outdoor activities.

Increasing Humidity Level

With the surge in rainfall, humidity rises to an average of about 85%. Fortunately, temperatures remain mild, so the dampness at least is not as oppressive as in Tokyo. Lightweight, breathable, and quick-dry clothing will help keep you dry.

Sunshine Hours & Daytime Hours

Sunshine Hours: about 4 hours
Sunrise: 4:22-4:24
Sunset: 18:54-19:04
Daytime Hours: 14 hours 31 minutes - 14 hours 41 minutes

With the rainy season arriving, sunshine hours are limited to around 4 hours daily, and foggy weather often makes sunrises or sunsets difficult to catch. Even so, the maximum UV index can spike to 10, so sun protection is still essential during sunny periods.

June enjoys the longest daytime hours of the year, lasting for at least 14.5 hours. This allows for relaxed exploration, but do note that most attractions won’t prolong their opening hours and usually stop service at around 17:00. Therefore, it’s best to schedule your sightseeing at those enclosed sites between 9:00 and 16:00.

Bottom Clothing: You can try shorts, jeans or sweatpants based on the temperature. For girls who want to look stylish, skirts or dresses are perfect items in the daytime but at night you need to add a pair of tights.

Footwear: Due to frequent rain this month, choose water-proof and non-slip sneakers, especially when you are hiking in the mountain area. It’s also ok to wear a pair of umbrella boots.

 Accessories:
Rain gear: A compact umbrella or a raincoat is essential during your visit.
Sun-protective items: A sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are useful to protect your skin from sunburn.

What to Do in Nikko in June

1. Abundant rain nourishes Nikko’s lush woods and feeds its waterfalls, making June one of the best times to see them. A visit to the Kegon Falls - whose viewing platform is accessible by elevator - is particularly rewarding this month, though it’s often busy with tourists. Ryuzu Falls provides a calmer experience, but equally scenic.

2. With mild climate in June, you are highly recommended to visit Nikko’s World Heritage sites: Rinnoji Temple, Toshogu Shrine and Futaransan Shrine, without feeling sticky summer heat at all.

3. If you are about to encounter a heavy rainy climate the next day, indoor attractions are great options. The Nikko Natural Science Museum introduces the natural environment and history of Oku-Nikko, while the British Embassy Villa Memorial Park preserves British style architecture and shares stories of Nikko’s past as an international summer resort.

4. June is also iris season. The Nikko Botanical Garden comes alive with purple irises in full bloom, alongside countless other plant varieties, making it a great spot for a stroll.
