Nikko Weather in December

 Season: Winter
 Overview:
1. December in Nikko marks the true arrival of winter: cold and dry.
2. The day-night temperature difference is quite huge, making layering dressing essential.
3. It is off season in Nikko, with fewer tourists and cheaper hotels.

Cold Climate

Nikko’s weather in December is quite cold, with an average temperature ranging from -4-5°C (25-41°F), showing the arrival of winter season.

In the first half of December, Nikko offers slightly milder days, with highest temperatures ranging from -1-10°C (30-50°F). During midday, when the sun reaches its peak, the highest temperature can briefly reach about 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit).

Late December pushes the average down to -4-6°C (25-43°F). During this period, daytime temperatures are often below freezing. On cloudy and snowy days, the lowest temperature on daytime hours can plummet to -9°C (15°F). When the sun is out, it brings a gentle warm feeling, with highs of 0-4°C (32-39°F).

Nikko also has a large day-night temperature swing in December - up to 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) - so layered clothing is essential to stay comfortable throughout the day.

In the mountain areas around Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, it is even colder, with lows often down to -5°C (23°F). A warm down jacket is a must if you plan to explore these spots.

Very Little Snow, Low Humidity

December is Nikko’s driest month, with only 41 mm of precipitation from 7 days or so. Most of it falls as light snow, though a little rain may occur when temperatures rise slightly. While the snow falls, the top of distant mountains visible from Lake Chuzenji is capped in white, creating breathtaking winter scenery.

Do note that in Oku-Nikko’s higher elevations, roads can become icy, so walk carefully.

With so little precipitation, the air is crisp and dry, with the average humidity level of about 68 %. The dry air is ideal for hikes and outdoor sightseeing, but if you are sensitive to dryness, consider bringing a mask or moisturizer to stay comfortable.

Sunshine Hours & Daytime Hours

Sunshine Hours: about 5 hours
Sunrise: 6:35-6:53
Sunset: 16:25-16:35
Daytime Hours: 9 hours 39 minutes - 9 hours 50 minutes

December offers plenty of bright, sunny days with weak UV levels - max UV index: 2, perfect for outdoor activities and photography.

The shortcoming is the shortest daylight hours of the year - less than 10 hours. To make the most of your trip, schedule your key activities earlier in the day. A smart choice is to book a stay at a hot spring hotel. After sunset, you can soak in steaming onsen baths instead of worrying about limited evening options. If you’re going to chase sunset, try to book a hotel close to your chosen viewing spot, as walking back after dark in the mountain area can be tricky due to limited lamps.
