July is one of the hottest months of the year in Nikko. Yet, the weather is much cooler than nearby areas because of the higher altitude. The average temperature here hovers between 17-25 degrees Celsius (63-77degrees Fahrenheit). By contrast, Tokyo in July averages around 24-28°C (75-82°F). So many visitors come to Nikko just three hours away from Tokyo for a cooler getaway.

On sunny days, mid-day temperatures can reach up to 29°C (84°F), while high temperatures on cloudy or rainy days may drop to 17°C (63°F). Therefore, be sure to adjust your clothing according to the weather.

Additionally, there is a significant temperature difference between day and night: daytime temperatures are about 10°C (50°F) higher than that of nighttime.

July falls in the rainy season in Nikko. It sees the average precipitation of 223 mm over 24 rainy days. Most rain comes in light to moderate showers, though occasional heavy storms can bring up to 80 mm of rainwater in a single day.

Fully sunny days are rare, but it’s also unusual for rain to last nonstop all day. With portable rain gear, outdoor sightseeing is still manageable.

Most Humid Time in Nikko

July is the most humid month in Nikko, with the average humidity level of around 87 %. But don’t worry too much: thanks to Nikko’s abundant forests and relatively mild temperatures, you don’t feel as sticky or oppressive as in Tokyo.

Nikko in July enjoys generous daytime hours, allowing a relatively relaxing journey. But if you want to explore the Kinugawa and Kawaji Onsen area, try to set off early. Although this place boasts beautiful scenery, it is sparsely populated, so the tram runs infrequently. Missing a tram means a long wait, and walking in this area after dark is not safe. Besides, the rainy climate in Nikko might make it difficult to catch a stunning sunrise or sunset view because of the blurry fog. But you can have a try.

Despite shortening sunshine hours, the UV rays can be harsh: the maximum UV index can reach 10. Therefore, it’s necessary to take sun-protective measures every day in Nikko.

What to Wear in July 

 Upper Clothing: Light and breathable tops such as T-shirts or thin shirts. For evening or hiking in the mountain area, it’s necessary to bring a light jacket, better be water-proof to help you stay dry. 

 Bottom Clothing: Comfortable light pants or jeans are ideal. Shorts or skirts are fine for casual strolls around central Nikko. 

 Shoes: It’s recommended to wear water-proof hiking shoes or non-slip rain boots. With frequent rain and wet trails in the suburb, avoid sandals unless you’re just exploring around town.

 Accessories:
Rain Gear: Very essential. A foldable umbrella for city areas and a lightweight rain jacket for hiking. 

Sun-Protective Items: Even on overcast days, UV rays are strong. Thus, it’s always a good idea to bring sunscreen with 30+ SPF, a hat and sunglasses.

1. Ryuo Festival

It’s an iconic summer festival in the Kinugawa and Kawaji Onsen area, held at the end of July 2026, usually on a Friday and a Saturday. It features traditional ceremonies, a lively parade, and firework shows by the river. It is a perfect chance to enjoy the festive spirit with hot spring culture.

2. Waterfall Tour 

July’s abundant rainfall makes Nikko’s waterfalls truly spectacular, so a waterfall-hopping trip is highly recommended. 
 Kegon Falls: The most famous and please expect dramatic water flow. One can get to its viewing platform by elevator. 
 Ryuzu Falls: Quieter and less crowded, framed by lush greenery.
 Kirifuri Falls: Known for its step-like cascades and misty surroundings.

Travel Tips: 

1. It’s always a good idea to confirm the meteorological reports in advance to keep safe during your trip, as heavy downpours could result in flooding in the mountains. 
2. Considering July is a peak travel season, you’ll see busier attractions and more expensive hotel rates. Therefore, you are advised to avoid weekends, and visit Nikko in early July as Japan’s school vacation period usually starts in mid-July. 
3. Be aware of bears in Nikko: If you encounter a warning sign, please do not approach.
