Highest Temperatures All Year Round, Yet Cool

Nikko in August experiences the hottest climate throughout the year, but visitors rarely feel scorching. Its average temperature ranges from 18-26°C (64-79°F), and the highest temperature in the daytime hardly exceeds 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit), which is much lower than those nearby popular travel destinations, like Tokyo and Osaka. Therefore, many people come to Nikko to spend a cool holiday.

However, the temperature difference between day and night is quite significant: temperature in early mornings and late evenings often hover between 10-15°C (50-59°F). Overcast or rainy days are cooler, with a noticeable chill in the mountains. Therefore, layered clothing is necessary.

Most Rainy Month

Nikko receives the most rain of the year in August, with the average precipitation of 318 mm over 22 rainy days. Despite that, there are hardly concentrated heavy downpours. The rainy pattern is dominated by frequent brief showers and light rain. But you need to notice that occasional thunderstorms might happen in higher altitude areas.

Plus, you’ll find many surprises on outdoor excursions on a rainy day. After rain showers, you might witness wonderful rainbows over Kegon Falls or stunning cloud seas from the Kirifuri Highlands.

High Humidity Level

Rainy climate in Nikko results in a pretty high humidity level. But Nikko’s abundant greenery and flowing rivers keep the air fresh and pleasant. As long as you wear breathable fabrics, you won’t feel any stickiness or discomfort.

Sunshine Hours & Daytime Hours

Sunshine Hours: about 5 hours
Sunrise: 4:47-5:11
Sunset: 18:11-18:48
Daytime Hours: 13 hours 2 minutes - 14 hours 1 minutes

Sunshine hours increase slightly, and ultraviolet rays can be quite strong, with the maximum UV index reaching up to 10. Therefore, sun protection is essential, even on cloudy days.

In August, Nikko enjoys at least 13 hours of daylight, giving visitors plenty of time to explore. But that doesn’t mean you can plan your trip too casually. August is the busiest month in Nikko. You will not only see lots of crowds at major attractions but also long queues in front of the bus station. To make the most of your trip, it’s still advised to start your day early.

Travel Highlights in August

1. Nantai-san Climbing Festival

It is one of the most important annual events in Nikko Futaransan Shrine with over 1,200 years of history, held from the 31st of July to 7th of August. During the festival, the usually restricted inner shrine opens for worshippers. And Mount Nantai’s trailhead is specially opened at night, so you can climb overnight and be rewarded with the breathtaking sunrise from the summit. In addition, there are traditional dances, fireworks and special rituals by Lake Chuzenji.

Tip: The trailhead is not open every day during the festival, so check the schedule in advance.

At 1,200 meters (3,940 feet) above sea level, the Kirifuri Highlands serves as a cool escape from Japan’s August heat, with temperatures at least 8°C (46°F) lower than in the central city. In addition, August is the peak blooming season of Tamura-so and Tsurigane-ninjin flowers, painting the highlands with vibrant colors. Don’t miss the famous Sky Corridor, a 1,445-step wooden walkway offering panoramic mountain views.

Tip: Bring a warm jacket, as you may even feel chilly here in mid-summer.

Travel Advice:

1. August overlaps with summer vacation of many countries over the world, as well as Japan’s Obon Festival, one of the major local public holidays. Thus, there are countless domestic and international tourists. You’d better book your accommodation and transportation in advance to secure the best options.
2. For a better travel experience, consider visiting Nikko in late August rather than earlier in the month, when crowds thin slightly.
3. It’s always helpful to check the forecast and adjust your travel plans flexibly. When it’s raining heavily, visit some indoor attractions like the British Embassy Villa Memorial Park and Nikko Natural Science Museum.
