Lake Khovsgol Weather

Situated in the northernmost part of Mongolia, Lake Khovsgol belongs to temperate continental climate zone. It has four distinct seasons including a frigid and dry winter lasting long from November to next March as well as a warm and pleasant summer from June to August. The weather of Lake Khovsgol in transitional spring and autumn is very changeable. But no matter what season it is, you need to mind the large day-night temperature differences. The precipitation is not high in general, thus having limited disruption on travel schedule. Instead, Lake Khovsgol area is endowed with abundant sunshine in most time. You should also know that extreme conditions like strong winds and snowstorm occur around Lake Khovsgol.

Temperature: Comparatively Low with Regional Differences

Compared with many worldwide destinations, the temperature in Lake Khovsgol is low and featured by large differences both yearly and daily. The daytime high temperature ranges from about 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit) in hottest summer to -23°C (-9°F) in freezing winter. Meanwhile, the day-night temperature difference usually keeps over 10°C (50°F), sometimes even reaching around 20°C (68°F) especially in the transitional periods of spring and autumn. 

Besides, there is significant regional temperature differences since Lake Khovsgol extends over 130km (81 mi) from south to north. The temperature in northern part around Khankh is normally about 10°C (50°F) lower than that in the southern part around Khatgal. Sudden temperature drops also occur now and then. It means that clothes of multiple layers should be prepared whenever you visit Lake Khovsgol.

What is the Coldest Month in Lake Khovsgol?

January is the coldest month in Lake Khovsgol, seeing the daily highs mostly fluctuating between -23 and -10°C (-9 - 14°F) and the night lows swaying between -33 and -17°C (-27 - 1°F), which once dropped to below -40°C (-40°F) historically. Therefore, the weather of Lake Khovsgol in January is bone-chilling. If you play on the thickly frozen lake, the perceived temperatures get even lower. After staying outdoors for only several minutes, visitors could gain a red face and numb hands. 

What is the Hottest Month in Lake Khovsgol?

The hottest month is definitely July, but Lake Khovsgol climate during this time is free from burning hot, even a little chilly at night. In most time, the daytime high temperatures hover in the range of 11 - 28°C (82°F), rarely exceeding 30°C (86°F) even in the hottest south; when night falls, the degrees drop and normally swing between 4 and 16°C (39 - 61°F). To be concrete, Lake Khovsgol climate is pleasantly warm during daytime and turns cool after sunsets in July.

Precipitation: Not High with Seasonal Variations

In Lake Khovsgol area, the average annual precipitation reaches 300 - 400 mm (11.81 - 12.75 in), a relatively high level in Mongolia, but still belongs to semi-arid level worldwide. Throughout the year, it is distributed unevenly. The precipitation in summer accounts for over 70% of the total amount, but you won’t feel very humid even in the peak rainy season. While, its winter receives scarce precipitation around 3 mm (0.12 in) per month, making the climate of Lake Khovsgol especially dry. Multiple precipitation forms can be seen, primarily rainfall in summer and snowfall in winter. Both are possible in changeable spring and autumn.  

Surprisingly, the lake suffers from no water shortage even in the driest months and enjoys plenty of water reserve year-round. It is partly because over 90 rivers from surrounding mountains converge here. Moreover, underground water replenishes the lake continuously.

Sufficient Sunshine 

Lake Khovsgol enjoys plenty of sunshine in most time. For 7 months from March to September, the sunlight duration is no less than 8 hours per day. So, visitors could spend most of their trip under bright sunshine. June is the sunniest month with the longest sunlight time of 10 hours per day on average, which account for over two thirds of the 16-hour daytime. November to next January sees the least sunshine, only 5 hours each day averagely. Fortunately, the UV index is not that high, maximum at level 7 in June and July, but sun protection measures remain necessary in the high-altitude area.

Best Time to Visit Lake Khovsgol

June to August and December to early March are the best times to visit Lake Khovsgol when you could enjoy its vibrant summer and snow-covered winter respectively.

During summer, it is neither sweltering hot nor extremely dry, ideal for hiking, fishing, boating and visiting Tsaatan Reindeer Tribes. Visitor could enjoy the natural scenery in prime including peaceful blue lake and luxuriant forests around. More importantly, Naadam Festival is celebrated in Lake Khovsgol around middle July, small-scaled but more primitive and similarly excellent.

Despite of the freezing temperatures, December to early March presents visitors the magnificent blue ice which is several meters thick. It is such a unique experience to play even drive on the frozen Lake Khovsgol with irregular cracks and bubbles. You could also have much fun during Ice Festival held in early March which involves various ice sculptures and interesting activities.

Spring: April - May

Weather

In spring, Lake Khovsgol experiences drastically fluctuating temperatures with the exceptionally large day-night difference. In April, the daytime highs mostly keep over 5°C (41°F) and accumulated snow starts to melt, but extreme conditions over 20°C (68°F) and below 0°C (32°F) also occur. In May with obvious temperature rise, the high temperatures usually maintain above 10°C (50°F) when plants start to sprout. The night lows during spring tend to swing between -13 and 4°C (9 - 39°F). Meanwhile, the average precipitation is quite low, 11 mm in April and 24 mm in May (0.43 - 0.95 in). It falls as multiple forms including rain, snow and sleet.

Tip

Considering the changeable climate in spring, visitors had better keep close eyes on weather forecast if you plan to visit Lake Khovsgol. It would be more precise when checking it again one or two days before departure. 

Summer: June - August

Weather

Generally speaking, summer in Lake Khovsgol is warm and cozy most of the time even in hottest July, thus becoming an ideal resort for visitors to escape scorching summer heat of other places. The daytime high temperatures range from 8 to 27°C (46 - 81°F) and the low values from 3 to 16°C (37 - 61°F), which means the nights are a little cool even chilly and thicker coats are needed. 

June to August is also the local rainy season, seeing the majority of rainfall in a year. It peaks in July whose average monthly precipitation reaches 93 mm (3.66 in) distributed over 18 days and the other two months see roughly 60 - 80 mm (2.36 - 3.15 in). Though not that high, it can fall suddenly and unpredictably, so raingear should be prepared in order to continue your sightseeing in rainy days as it is usually in form of drizzles and showers. Thunderstorms and downpours can be hardly seen; even if, they only last for a short period.

Tip

June to August is the peak travel season of Lake Khovsgol and the travel cost surges especially in July, the busiest time for tourism. If your trip in 2026 encounters this period, be sure to book air flights and hotels as early as possible so that you could enjoy relatively low prices and spend a smooth holiday.

Autumn: September - October

Weather

With the arrival of autumn, quick and significant temperature drops can be seen, which is especially obvious in late October. During the two months, the daytime high degrees plunge from the range of 9 - 18°C (48 - 64°F) to -6 - 6°C (21 - 43°F); while the low values drop from -3 - 6°C (27 - 43°F) to -18- -7°C (0 - 19°F), even around -23 °C (-9°F) in late October. Generally speaking, the weather of Lake Khovsgol turns from crisp and cool in September to cold and freezing in October.

As the rainy season passes, the monthly precipitation decreases from 36 mm to 13 mm (1.42 - 0.51 in) on average. In consequence, the climate gets increasingly dry. Mostly, it falls as rainfall, but light snow is also possible. The snow view is normally short-lived in September, but coming to October, it doesn’t melt easily especially for the latter half.

What Can Visitors See

Various autumn views can be seen during this time. At the beginning of September, the forests are tinged with only hints of yellow and then turn golden around middle month. The golden view can last to early October since when the leaves fall and the landscape becomes increasingly brown and barren. 

Winter: November - Next March

Weather

Winter in Lake Khovsgol is quite long, lasting for 5 months from November to next March. With the extremely low temperatures commonly around -20°C (-4°F), the whole winter is characterized by severe coldness and visitors need to keep every inch of their skin covered by thick clothes. It is not until March that daytime temperatures above 0°C (32°F) can be seen on occasions. 

The precipitation comes to a scarce level when Lake Khovsgol receives the monthly snowfall no more than 5 mm (0.2 in) on average. With about 5 precipitation days every month, visitors might feel pretty dry with sore throat and chapping skin. It normally snows lightly as drizzles and showers, but occasionally snowstorm might hit this area. As the snow does not melt and remain there, snow views are very likely available during winter.

Clothes: thick thermal underwear, padded hoodies, heavy sweaters, down vests; 3-in-1 windbreakers, down jackets, mink coats, long and heavy down coats; woolen long johns, fleece-lined jeans, thick jacket trousers, down pants…

Tips

1. In early November and late March, you are not suggested to step on the frozen lake since the ice might be not thick enough and easily get broken. 

2. In some years, Ice Festival is held in early March in Lake Khovsgol, for example March 2 to 5 in 2022. The date and location in 2027 are still unknown and you need to make further check before you settle your schedule down.

3. When snow occurs, it is not recommended to explore the forests, but you are still allowed to wander along the lake bank if living nearby. Besides, you had better wear clothes of bright colors in snowy days with low visibility.
