In spring, Lake Khovsgol experiences drastically fluctuating temperatures with the exceptionally large day-night difference. In May with obvious temperature rise, the high temperatures usually maintain above 10°C (50°F) when plants start to sprout. The night lows during spring tend to swing between -13 and 4°C (9 - 39°F). Winter in Lake Khovsgol is quite long, lasting for 5 months from November to next March. With the extremely low temperatures commonly around -20°C (-4°F), the whole winter is characterized by severe coldness and visitors need to keep every inch of their skin covered by thick clothes. It is not until March that daytime temperatures above 0°C (32°F) can be seen on occasions.The precipitation comes to a scarce level when Lake Khovsgol receives the monthly snowfall no more than 5 mm (0.2 in) on average. With about 5 precipitation days every month, visitors might feel pretty dry with sore throat and chapping skin. 1. In early November and late March, you are not suggested to step on the frozen lake since the ice might be not thick enough and easily get broken.2. In some years, Ice Festival is held in early March in Lake Khovsgol, for example March 2 to 5 in 2022. The date and location in 2027 are still unknown and you need to make further check before you settle your schedule down.
3. When snow occurs, it is not recommended to explore the forests, but you are still allowed to wander along the lake bank if living nearby. Besides, you had better wear clothes of bright colors in snowy days with low visibility.
