Nara Cycling & Bike Rental

Many visitors find cycling a pleasant, comfortable way to explore Nara. It broadens your travel scope considerably, letting you easily reach ancient suburban temples and hidden local lanes. The activity is not overly strenuous, so you can sightsee at a leisurely pace. You also enjoy full schedule flexibility, free to stop at any time when you come across a favorite attraction or charming small shop.

On top of that, Nara is inherently cycling-friendly. Most roads in the urban area are flat and spacious, and dedicated bicycle parking facilities are available around all major attractions.

What Bike Types and Prices are There?

Rental bikes in Nara fall into two main categories: regular bicycles and electric assist bikes. Both typically offer flexible rental periods of 3 hours, half a day, or a full day. Every bike comes standard with a basket, lock, and helmet, so you can select the option that best suits your needs.

For Downtown Sightseeing: Regular Bicycles

Daily rental ranges from 800 to 1,000 yen (5 - 6 US dollars). This option is perfectly sufficient for exploring Naramachi and nearby downtown attractions, and poses no extra strain for riders with average fitness.

For Longer Trips & Less Effort: Electric Assist Bikes

Daily rental ranges from 1,400 to 1,600 yen (8.6 - 10 US dollars). This is recommended if you plan to visit the Nishinokyo temple cluster (home to Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji), travel in summer, or have lower stamina. The bike delivers automatic power assistance while you pedal, making long rides and gentle slopes far less tiring. A single charge typically covers around 60 - 80 kilometers (37 - 50 miles), enough for a full day of exploring.

Where Can You Rent A Bike?

Nearly all major bike rental shops in Nara are clustered around the two main transport hubs - Kintetsu Nara Station and JR Nara Station. They are typically just a 2 to 3-minute walk from the station exits, so you can pick up your bike straight after arriving and start exploring right away.

Around Kintetsu Nara Station: Top Pick for Most Visitors

Right outside Kintetsu Nara Station, mainly near Exit 6 and Exit 7, you will find the largest concentration of bike rental shops, most within a 2-minute walk of the station. This makes it the top pick for most travelers arriving from Osaka and Kyoto via Kintetsu lines. Shops here offer a full selection of regular bicycles and electric assist bikes, with plenty of options to suit different needs. After pickup, it takes just 5 minutes to cycle to Naramachi and Nara Park. Some chain outlets allow cross-shop returns, so if you get tired halfway through, you can drop off your bike at any nearby location instead of riding all the way back to where you picked it up. Most shops are open from 9:00 to 18:00, and some provide self-service after-hours returns.

Around JR Nara Station: Option for JR Arrivals or Pass Holders

Around JR Nara Station, bike rental is more convenient for visitors arriving via JR lines. Eligible JR Rail Pass holders can also rent a regular bicycle for free for one day. Note that while regular bicycles are in ample supply here, electric assist bikes are limited in quantity. The station is also slightly farther from downtown, adding roughly 10 minutes of cycling time to reach Nara Park after pickup. The official rental point is just outside the East Exit. It is open from 8:00 to 18:00 year-round with staffed in-person service.

How Do I Rent and Return A Bike?

Rental services in Nara are offered in two formats: self-service and staffed. A valid passport is required for both options, and most locations accept cash only.

Self-Service Shops

Rental process:

1.Pick your desired bike and take note of its bike number.
2.Place the information page of your passport on the marked area of the self-service machine to complete identity verification.
3.Select the rental package for your bike number on the machine, insert cash to pay, and collect your change.
4.The machine will print a slip with a 4-digit code. Enter the code on the bike lock to unlock it. For electric assist bikes, press the power button on the frame to confirm the power is activated.
5.Check that the basket, lock, helmet, and other standard accessories are in place before setting off.

Return process:

1.Wheel the bike back to the designated parking zone inside the shop and secure the lock. Be sure to turn off the power for electric assist bikes.
2.Drop the key or code slip into the dedicated return box at the entrance, then you may leave. Self-service returns are available outside operating hours, with no need to wait for staff assistance.

Staffed Shops

Rental process:

1.Inform the staff of your chosen bike type and rental period.
2.Present your passport and fill out a form with your contact details.
3.Pay the rental fee.
4.The staff will explain bike operation and parking guidelines, then hand over the key or access code.
5.Confirm the bike and all accessories are in order before setting off.

Return process:

1.Ride back to the designated parking zone during the shop’s opening hours.
2.Return the key. The process is complete once the staff inspects the bike and confirms no damage.

Popular Cycling Routes

Downtown Landmarks Route: Kintetsu Nara Station → Nara Park → Todai-ji Temple → Kasuga Taisha Shrine → Mount Wakakusa → Return

The full route stretches 5 - 8 kilometers (3 - 5miles), taking roughly 40 minutes of non-stop cycling. We recommend setting aside half a day for casual stops and sightseeing, and this route works well for first-time visitors to Nara.

It connects all of Nara’s core landmarks with no backtracking. You will pass Nara Park, where you can get up close with wild deer, Todai-ji Temple, home to the world’s largest wooden building, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine dotted with rows of stone lanterns. At the end of the route, you can park your bike at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, hike to the summit for a panoramic view of the entire city, and catch the sunset if you visit in the late afternoon.

Suburban Temple Route: Nara City Center → Toshodai-ji Temple → Yakushi-ji Temple → Hokki-ji Temple → Horyu-ji Temple → Return

The entire route covers 30 - 40 kilometers (19 - 25miles) and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours of continuous cycling. We recommend setting aside a full day for the visit.

This route fully brings out the strengths of cycling. The ancient temples in western Nara have infrequent bus services and require time-consuming backtracking, while cycling allows you to visit them in one smooth itinerary with no detours. The path runs mostly through pastoral residential neighborhoods, quiet with few visitors, and passes multiple UNESCO World Heritage ancient temples. However, the route is relatively long with a few gentle slopes, so electric assist bikes are strongly recommended.

Tips

1.The core deer-viewing areas of Nara Park and the approach paths to temples and shrines are pedestrian-only zones, and bikes are not permitted inside. Dedicated bike parking areas are available around the perimeter of each attraction. Please do not park your bike randomly along the roadside.

2. Ride on the left side of the road, obey traffic signals, and never ride against the flow of traffic. The routes to suburban ancient temples have very few streetlights, so night riding is not recommended.

3. Kids’ bikes and bikes with child seats are not available at every rental shop. If you need these options, we recommend renting from the shop next to the nursery near Kintetsu Nara Station.

4. Most major rental shops do not require a deposit. Only a small number of local shops around Horyu-ji Temple and shops offering premium bike models charge a partial deposit. The deposit will be fully refunded upon return, provided the bike is undamaged and all accessories are intact.
