A power-company executive calculated that the total monthly electricity cost for all the city lights visible from the mountain summit was roughly one million US dollars, which gave birth to this title.

Located on the upper slopes of Mount Rokko, Rokko Garden Terrace serves as the main relaxing area and the most popular sightseeing spot on the mountain. 2. Rokko Alpine Pasture

Modeled after Swiss alpine pasture, this spacious high-elevation pasture sits on Mount Rokko’s open grassy terrain. Besides animal encounters, visitors may join seasonal hand-made workshops for butter and cheese-making, and taste signature fresh-milk ice-cream produced onsite. Nestled on the gentle highland slopes, Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden is a well-known natural attraction featuring rich alpine vegetation and well-maintained walking trails. How to Get to Mount Rokko?

Starting from Sannomiya Station in central Kobe, this trip requires several transfers.

• 1. Take JR, Hankyu or Hanshin trains from Sannomiya Station to JR Rokkomichi, Hankyu Rokko or Hanshin Mikage station respectively.

• 2. Transfer to Kobe City Bus Route 16 at these stations, heading for Rokko Cable-Sanjo Station at the mountain foot. The bus ride takes about 20 to 40 minutes depending on your starting station.

• 3. Board the cable car for a roughly 10-minute uphill ride to Rokko Sancho station, the mountain-top hub.

• 4. Once on the summit, take mountain bus Route 1 heading for the East Rokko area or bus Route 2 for the West Rokko and Mount Maya to reach individual attractions.

Please note that mountain buses can have fairly long waiting time, so it’s recommended to check on-site timetables.

Practical Tips for Visiting Mount Rokko

• 1. Strong temperature differences exist between the Kobe city and Mount Rokko’s summit. Even in warm seasons, bring an extra light jacket for sunset and night stays.

• 2. Bad weather such as thick fog can completely block distant views, so check local weather forecasts before you set out, especially when your main goal is the sunset and famous nightscape.

• 3. Weekends and holidays draw higher crowds. If your schedule allows, come on a weekday for more space at observation decks.

• 4. Restaurants, cafes, and shops concentrate mainly around Rokko Garden Terrace. Carry some drinking water if you intend to walk further along hiking trails.
