Typhoon
Every year, roughly 3 - 5 typhoons strike Hakata, often from June to October, which causes strong winds, rainstorms and even severe disasters. Besides, there is a wealth of big events like Hakata Dontaku Port Festival, one of three major celebrations in Fukuoka, by which you can understand traditional culture of Hakata. From late March to early April, cherry blossoms are in full bloom, offering imposing natural landscapes.
Hakata in autumn has cool and comfortable temperatures with more sunny days. Moreover, many shrines participate in Hakata Light Up Walk every November when they are illuminated by beautiful lights with an aura of mystique.
Hakodate Climate - Seasons & Travel Recommendations
Spring: March - May

Outfits: Thin sweaters, medium-weight coats, long sweatpants and comfortable sneakers are suitable outfits in March. From April to May, pack thinner clothes such as long-sleeved T-shirts, cardigans and jeans. Besides, bring along a vest to cope with a large daily temperature difference.

1. Kushida Shrine, Maizuru Park, Sanno Park and Reisen Park are the best places to admire cherry blossoms from late March to early April.
2. Don’t miss Hakata Dontaku Port Festival during May 3 to 4 when you can see vibrant floats, Dontaku parade and Hakata Niwaka (traditional improv comedy).
Summer: June - August
Weather: The overall weather in summer is hot and humid. Specifically, highs are often around 25 - 35 ℃ (77 - 95℉) while lows rarely fall below 15℃ (59℉). The rainy season usually lasts from early June to middle July, but similar weather conditions still occur in August when sultry air encounters a stationary front. Sunny days here receive strong sunshine with the UV Index of 10 - 11.


1. Flexibly arrange your travel itinerary according to local weather forecast. For example, if it rains, you are advised to visit indoor places including JR Hakata City, Hakata Station Ichibangai and Hakata Machiya Folk Museum.
2. At sunny noon with strong UV rays, it’s advised to visit Canal City Hakata full of popular restaurants. After satisfying lunch, you may go some shopping at anime-related stores and clothing shops inside.
3. Hakata Gion Yamakasa, one of three major Gion festivals in Japan, is celebrated from July 1 to July 15, and you can head to the area around Kushida Shrine to enjoy it.
Autumn: September - November


Travel Highlights:
1. Held on Sep. 12 - Sep. 18 each year, Hakozaki Shrine Hojoya Festival is the most worth seeing in Fukuoka. There are traditional rituals and processions, along with hundreds of food stalls selling local snacks like Takoyaki and grilled Mochi with bean paste (specialty of Hakozaki Shrine).
2. Sumo wrestling is very much a part of Japanese culture. Often in middle November, Fukuoka International Center holds Grand Sumo Tournament lasting for two weeks, offering you a precious chance to experience this spectacular scene.
Winter: December - February
Weather: The winter in Hakata is cold, but temperatures hardly fall below freezing. Hakata does not get much snow, and it is mainly light snow during late December to January without snow accumulation. The region near the Hakata Port occasionally experiences biting sea winds, making you feel colder. The daylight hours in winter are the shortest of the year with an average of 10 hours per month.
Outfits: Indoor places are well-heated in Hakata, so it’s better to wear two layers. Hoodies and sweaters are both fine as the inner layer, and thick overcoats or down jackets are good choices as outer clothes. For the bottom, thick sweatpants and comfy short boots are enough. Woolen hats, gloves are also necessary against cold heavy winds, and pack an umbrella or a raincoat.

1. Winter Illumination Show around Hakata Station at 16:45 - 23:00 during November to early January cannot be missed. Christmas Market is also held nearby, providing delicious food, groceries and tasty beverages.
2. Kushida Shrine, Sumiyoshi Shrine and Tochoji Temple celebrate Setsubun on February 2 or 3 to drive away misfortune and bring good luck. It is a good way to experience Japanese traditional rituals.
