Every July 1 to 15, Hakata celebrates its most passionate festival Hakata Gion Yamakasa with a rich history of more than 780 years. Vibrant 10-meter-high (11 yd) yamakasa floats are on show during the first two weeks, when you can not only take close-up photos as keepsakes but also understand local traditional culture and art. The highlight of the festival is Yamakasa Race at 4:59 on July 15 that groups of men in Japanese traditional thongs depart from Kushida Shrine and push their floats in a 5-kilometer (5,468 yd) race, definitely leaving an indelible impression on you.

1. In fact, July is not a nice time for travel, yet it is the peak season in Hakata.
