What to Wear in Hakata in February

 Clothes: Onion-like dressing method is always the first option in February since it has a huge temperature gap between indoors and outdoors. For example, wear a thin sweater as the inner layer and a 3-in-1 jacket with a detachable fleece on top. When the temperature goes up, you can take off the fleece. Regarding the low part, any fleece lined pants are recommended for males, while females can wear a long wool skirt paired with thermal leggings.

 Footwear: Walkable shoes like hiking shoes should be chosen considering you may walk a lot. A small can of anti-slip spray is necessary in case of rain.

 Others: Medium-thick hats, scarves and gloves are needed to cope with high winds. Don’t forget to prepare rain gear and some moisturizing products.

1. Kushida Shrine, Sumiyoshi Shrine and Tochoji Temple celebrate Setsubun Festival on every February 2 to 3, and some ceremonies are worth experiencing such as bean-throwing exorcisms and wish-making rituals. What’s more, the three entrances of Kushida Shrine are decorated with 5-meter-tall (16 feet) Okame masks to welcome prayers from January 15 to February 15, and reportedly passing through its big mouth can bring you good luck and happiness.
2. If it rains, you’d better visit indoor sites: Canal City Hakata, JR Hakata City, Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, Shopping Park LaLaport and Kawabata Shopping Arcade.
3. February is one of the best periods in Hakata to savor oysters with velvety and rich texture. Hakata Bayside Place has a gourmet feast- Oyster Hut, from November to March, when besides oysters, other fresh seafood like scallops and shrimps is offered. 
4. Due to National Foundation Day and Emperor Akihito’s birth, local people take one day off on February 11 and three days off on February 22 - 24 respectively, so some restaurants, attractions and stores get a little crowded during these two periods.
