Versions and Prices of Japan Rail Pass

According to the different validity periods and seat classes, JR Pass has 6 versions: 7-day, 14-day, and 21-day ordinary car versions and 7-day, 14-day, and 21-day green car versions. With the ordinary car version, you can only take the ordinary class seats of JR trains unlimitedly within its validity period; while with the green car version, in addition to the ordinary class seats, you can also enjoy green class seats - first-class seats of JR trains, with more comfortable environment.

Is A Japan Rail Pass Worth to Buy? / Should I Buy a JR Pass?

It depends on your detailed itinerary. 

If you have a Japan travel plan that is over 7 days, include many cities spanning far distance, and cover many rides of Shinkansen, you are recommended to buy a JR Pass. However, if you plan to visit only one or two cities, or explore only a main region of Japan like the Kanto region, the nationwide JR Pass might not pay for itself. Actually, you are advised to make a rough itinerary and calculate how much you could save with a JR Pass before buying one.

Besides, you may want to know that, since the pass has limited validity period, you may have to plan a relatively rushed trip.

How to Buy and Use JR Pass

Purchasing Japan Rail Pass

You can buy a JR Pass from its official website or some JR-designated agencies, as mentioned above. However, remember that regardless of the purchase channel you use, what you purchase is actually a voucher known as the Exchange Order. After arriving in Japan, you should get a physical JR Pass with this voucher first.

For your convenience, you are more recommended to buy the JR Pass on the official website, because you can reserve seats for Shinkansen and limited express trains online in advance for free after buying a JR Pass on the website. Moreover, as mentioned above, on and after October 1, 2026, the JR Pass sold by JR-designated agencies will be more expensive.

 Tips for purchasing a JR Pass on the official website:
1. What do I need to purchase a JR Pass?
An e-mail address, name, and passport number. Besides, a credit card of VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners, or Discover should be prepared to complete the payment.
2. Is the “start date” I choose when booking a JR Pass on the official website the date that the pass begins to take effect?
Not really. When booking a JP Pass online, you will need to select any date within the following month as the “start date”. It is actually a reference for picking up your physical pass. For example, if you choose April 1 as the start date of your 7-day JR Pass, you can collect your physical one before 23:00 on April 7 (Japan Time). As for the actual validity period of the JR Pass, you can determine it at the time you collect your physical pass.
3. Can I change the start date of my booked JR Pass?
Yes, you can. Before 23:30 on the start date you chose earlier (Japan Time), you can change it on the official website up to 20 times and for free.
4. Can I get a refund for my JR Pass?
Yes, you can get a refund before 23:30 on the start date you chose (Japan Time) after submitting an online application. A processing fee of JPY560 (USD3.6) will be charged.

Obtaining a Physical JR Pass with the Voucher

 At JR Ticket Machines with Passport Readers – More Recommended
In some JR West and East areas such as Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, Tokyo Station, Ueno Station, Shinjuku Station, Sendai Station, Shin-Osaka Station, Osaka Station, etc., you will notice some JR ticket machines with passport readers. These machines can help you exchange a physical JR Pass quickly and conveniently: Click “Receive Reserved Tickets” and “Exchange Order” one after another on the screen, and then you need to finally decide the date of use, scan your passport, etc., according to the instructions. Note that only those who bought a JR Pass on the official website can use the ticket machines to change the paper pass.

 At JR-designated Ticket Office Counters
A physical JR Pass can also be picked up at the JR-designated ticket office counters in Japan’s major airports, such as Narita, Haneda, and New Chitose, as well as at major JR stations. What you need to do is just show your voucher and passport, fill out the information chart, and finally decide the date of use. After that, the staff will give you a physical card. Be sure to double-check the date of use shown on the card, which cannot be adjusted once you leave the ticket office.

1. The date of use is allowed to be different from the start date you chose on the official website when booking. In specific, any date within the following one month after the date you change the physical card is OK to be chose.
2. Since JR Pass is only for foreign visitors, only those holding passports with immigration’s “Temporary Visitor” stamp or sticker can successfully get a paper pass.
3. Note that lines may be up in front of ticket machines or office counters sometimes, especially ticket office counters, indicating that you need to allow plenty of time.
4. For your reference, the operating times of ticket machines in main hubs are: Narita Airport: 6:30-21:45; Haneda Airport: 6:45-20:00; Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, and Kansai International Airport: 5:30-23:00. As for ticket office counters, most of them are in operating from 9:30-18:00. 

Using the JR Pass

When taking non-reserved seats, no matter those of JR local, rapid, limited express, or Shinkansen trains, you can get into the station and take a train by just inserting or showing your physical JR Pass at the ticket gate.

When taking reserved seats on some limited express or Shinkansen trains, you can also get into the station by just inserting or showing your physical JR Pass at the ticket gate, but in addition, you need to obtain a reserved-seat ticket in advance for inspection by the train conductor.

As mentioned above, if you purchase a JR Pass on the official website, you can book the reserved-seat tickets online in advance. Then, after arriving in Japan, just collect the paper tickets you have reserved with your paper pass at a JR-designated ticket office counter or a JR ticket machine. If you don’t want to or can’t book the tickets online in advance, you can also find a JR ticket machine and obtain a reserved-seat ticket after your arrival. Please insert your physical JR Pass and choose your departure and final stations and departure time first. Then, after all plans are shown on the screen, choose your train and seat and wait for the machine to dispense your reserved-seat ticket and JR Pass.

1. For those purchase a green car version JR Pass, you need to make reservations in advance as long as you plan to take the green car with comfortable first-class seats.
2. The validity period of the JR Pass is calculated in calendar days, and the pass expires at 24:00 on the last day of its validity period. As long as you board a JR train before 24:00 on the last day, you can enjoy the trip for free no matter when you get off the train.
