For a Japan trip that includes many cities, Japan Rail Pass, also called JR Pass, is quite recommended to buy to help you save transportation cost.

Versions and Prices of Japan Rail Pass

According to the different validity periods and seat classes, JR Pass has 6 versions: 7-day, 14-day, and 21-day ordinary car versions and 7-day, 14-day, and 21-day green car versions. With the ordinary car version, you can only take the ordinary class seats of JR trains unlimitedly within its validity period; while with the green car version, in addition to the ordinary class seats, you can also enjoy green class seats - first-class seats of JR trains, with more comfortable environment.

2. JR Pass can be bought on its official website, or through some JR-designated agencies, which provide both online and offline services. However, what you should know is that the JR Pass sold by the JR-designated agencies will experience a 4%-5% price increase since October 1, 2026.

Is A Japan Rail Pass Worth to Buy? / Should I Buy a JR Pass?

It depends on your detailed itinerary. 

If you have a Japan travel plan that is over 7 days, include many cities spanning far distance, and cover many rides of Shinkansen, you are recommended to buy a JR Pass. However, if you plan to visit only one or two cities, or explore only a main region of Japan like the Kanto region, the nationwide JR Pass might not pay for itself. Actually, you are advised to make a rough itinerary and calculate how much you could save with a JR Pass before buying one.

Besides, you may want to know that, since the pass has limited validity period, you may have to plan a relatively rushed trip.

How to Buy and Use JR Pass

You can buy a JR Pass from its official website or some JR-designated agencies, as mentioned above. Regardless of the purchase channel you use, you will receive a voucher after providing the necessary information and completing payment. If you purchase through the official website, the voucher will be in electronic form, whereas if you purchase through a designated agency, the voucher is typically in paper form. Then, when landing in Japan, you need to get a physical JR Pass with the voucher and your passport at designated ticket offices standing on major airports and JR stations. As a reminder, if you buy the pass on the official website, you can also get the physical one with the help of designated ticket machines, which are more convenient.

Simply by inserting the physical card into the ticket gate can you take most of JR trains. However, for some limited express trains and Shinkansen trains with only reserved seats, you need to get a reserved-seat ticket for free with your JR Pass in advance, which may be checked by the conductor on the train.
