Wake up early today as your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel for the Angkor Wat Temple sunrise, celebrated as one of the most stunning dawns in the world. The 12th-century Angkor Wat Temple, Cambodia’s iconic symbol and the most well-preserved structure in the world’s largest religious complex, embodies a Hindu worldview. Its five towers, resembling blooming lotus flowers, symbolize purity, enlightenment, rebirth, and sacred life, also depicting the soul’s journey from earthly dust to the divine. As you explore the temple’s delicate Hindu and Buddhist bas-reliefs, your guide will share the myths behind them.

After breakfast, we will continue exploring Angkor Thom, the final capital of the Khmer Empire. In 1145 AD, Suryavarman II unified the Khmer Empire and spent more than three decades constructing Angkor Wat. Following his death, internal conflicts and power struggles caused the empire to weaken, leading to its capital, Angkor, falling to the historical Indianized kingdom Champa. It wasn’t until 1181 AD that Jayavarman VII led a successful naval campaign against the Champa, reclaiming Angkor and driving the empire to its peak. While Angkor Wat represented the soul of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Thom symbolized its glory.

Situated at the center of Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple was built by Jayavarman VII (1122-1218 AD) as a personal monument. In addition to the iconic “Khmer Smile,” its 1,200-meter-long bas-relief gallery is a must-see. It vividly and carefully depicts intense battles with the Cham people while also celebrating the era of peace and prosperity. You can also spot many Chinese figures, characterized by hair buns, long ears, and beards. Your guide will explain how to identify the distinct physical traits of Khmer, Chinese, and Cham people.

After exploring the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, both renowned for their lifelike sculptures, we will proceed to Ta Prohm Temple to witness the harmonious interplay between nature and human craftsmanship. Built by Jayavarman VII to honor his mother, the temple was abandoned for centuries before being overtaken by the twisted roots of strangler fig trees that resemble giant pythons. The image of the temple merging with nature became iconic through the Hollywood adventure film ‘Tomb Raider’ and continues to draw many visitors to take photos and experience its atmospheric beauty.

Our last activity today is a 20-minute hike up Phnom Bakheng. At the top, we’ll enjoy the romantic sunset view from Bakheng Temple and take in the stunning panorama of Angkor Wat illuminated by the sunset’s golden glow. Please stay close to your guide during the descent, as the sun sets quickly and darkness can arrive suddenly.

To end the day beautifully, we’ve included a Khmer-style Apsara Dinner Show that illustrates the goddess bas-reliefs you saw earlier. Finally, your guide and driver will escort you back to your hotel.

Today, your guide and driver will greet you from your hotel for an exciting visit to the Angkor treasures in the grand and outer circuits. Our first destination is Preah Khan, a sacred temple built by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century to honor his father. Unlike most temples in Angkor built for specific religious purposes, this site functioned both as a temporary residence for the royal family and as a royal Buddhist university, hosting thousands of monks for their practice. It served as the cultural and religious hub of Angkor during its peak. The temple’s two-story stone tower is notably a rare example of Mediterranean-style double-story architecture among Angkor’s structures. According to legend, it was the storage place for the royal sword, endowing the temple with a legendary and storied reputation.

Next, we’ll travel through local villages with brief stops to showcase the authentic daily lives of Cambodian residents. When we reach the 10th-century Hindu temple Banteay Srei, follow your guide to admire its pink sandstone structure and the intricately carved, vividly three-dimensional bas-reliefs, especially the apsaras. Their elegant poses, tranquil expressions, and gentle smiles have earned them the nickname “Oriental Mona Lisa.” Most of the remaining bas-reliefs depict scenes from the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, illustrating moments of ancient Khmer life and battles with invaders.

★ Special Inclusions: Adventure to the Hidden Beng Mealea

After lunch, we’ll drive about an hour to the less-frequented Beng Mealea. Since it’s distant from Siem Reap and not covered by the Angkor Wat pass, many tour operators skip it. However, it’s one of the must-sees in Angkor Wat. To ensure our guests have a memorable Cambodian experience, we’ve purposely included it in our itinerary! Beng Mealea remains one of the most mysterious and pristine ruins, its charm stemming from its “collapse” – fallen domes, broken walls, and a sense of civilization’s fall and chaos. Walking with your guide along the wooden pathways through the ruins heightens this wild adventure. Elevated sites provide views of trees growing among the towers and moss covering statues, while exploring dark caves offers a true ‘temple escape’.

As today’s tour ends, your guide and driver will return you to your hotel. Alternatively, you may choose to get off at the Old Market for an interesting local bazaar experience and rich dinner options, and enjoy nightlife on the nearby Pub Street. Finally, you can get back by tuk-tuk.

After breakfast and check-out, your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel for a 40-minute drive to Tonle Sap Lake, where you’ll take a boat tour of the floating villages. Nearly 170 of these villages are spread across Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, home to around 800,000 stateless and identity-less people who have lived on the water for generations – a situation that most find utterly miserable. Despite their hardships and scarce resources, they live diligently within their means. In front of almost every humble house, a few potted plants are carefully maintained, though not expensive. Simple floating karaoke rooms and bars resonate with songs and laughter. The inscription “Grateful for Peace, Cambodia Needs Peace” painted against the Cambodian flag at the pier will surely leave a lasting impression on all visitors.

1. It is advisable to carry mosquito repellent and wear flat, non-slip footwear.
