Another Amazing China Experience
Book a small group tour and ended up with a private tour with just the two of us. Makes getting around much easier. We were meet at the airport by our guide, Celine, and taken to our accommodations, and picked up and dropped off each day. Celine was a great guide, very knowledgeable and flexible when we decided to modify the itinerary. And she stayed with us at the airport until we had checked in for our departing flight.
The first day was all about the terracotta warriors just outside of Xi’an. Emperor Qin, the first Emperor, had these built between 246 and 210 BC to protect him in the afterlife. They were hidden at his death and accidentally discovered by 7 farmers digging a well in 1974. There are 8000+ warriors and more still to be unearthed. Only one, the kneeling archer, was removed intact. There are officers, calvary with horses, archers and foot soldiers in the 3 current pits. Our guide, Celine, was so good in passing on all the history.
Added bonus on this tour was that we got to make mini terracotta warriors and had the opportunity to meet the last surviving farmer of the ones that located the warriors. So cool.
The next day was spent touring the city of Xi’an which was the first capital of China in 221 BC. We walked along Huiminjie street, attended the Xi’an museum, watched persons use the Magic Bell and walked along the top of the city wall. Another great learning experience.
What did I learn today from Celine, our guide:
- the silk road started in Xi’an during the Han dynasty in 130 BC initially to India and then continued onto Rome thru the Tang dynasty around 900 AD used by China for trade.
- Xi’an has the largest and best preserved city wall in China. It had 4 gates, is 14 meters wide at its base, 12 meters wide at the top, is 15 meters tall and 13.76 kms around. The buildings inside the wall can not be bigger than the gate towers. It was initially built during the Tang dynasty and then rebuilt and fortified during the Ming dynasty.
- the Magic Bell was built during the Jin dynasty in 1192. Striking the bell can allow one to pass messages to those who have passed, stop calamities and bring good luck and happiness.
Think everyone should have the opportunity to strike this bell.
It was a very positive experience and I highly recommend this tour.
