Penang is situated near the Equator, so experiences hot weather throughout the year. Monthly average temperatures are approximately from 24-31°C (75-88°F). During the day, temperatures can soar as high as 36°C (97°F), making it quite hot, especially under direct sunlight. Visitors should stay indoors during the hottest time of the day. However, evenings bring some relief. The temperature gets down to around 24°C (75°F), and the refreshing sea breeze makes visitors feel comfortable for outdoor walking. 

Rainy Season vs. Dry Season in Penang 

Penang is dominated by the Southwest Monsoon from April to November. During this period, it receives considerable rainfall, with monthly totals exceeding 170 mm. The wettest month in Penang is October, when rainfall can reach up to 374 mm, with 18 rainy days. However, the rain usually comes in the form of short and intense thunderstorms or brief afternoon showers, lasting for about ten minutes or so. Therefore, despite the rain, you can still have a pleasant trip if you plan it well. 

Penang experiences its dry season from December to March. But the term “dry” may be a bit misleading, as some rain still falls. It is significantly less than that during the monsoon months. Monthly rainfall in the dry season ranges from 61 mm to 129 mm. With lower humidity and reduced rainfall, the weather becomes more comfortable, making it a great time for outdoor activities like sightseeing and hiking. 

High Humidity & Sunshine 

Penang keeps a high humidity level throughout the year, averaging around 74%-85%, which can significantly influence the travel experience, especially for those who are not used to tropical climate. Besides, high humidity can make the heat feel even more intense to people. Visitors are recommended to wear clothes in lightweight, breathable and quick drying fabrics. 

During midday, when the sun is at its peak, visitors would feel particularly stuffy and muggy. Therefore, it is advisable to take breaks in air-conditioned spaces or enjoy indoor activities to stay clear of the discomfort during this period.

Best Time to Visit Penang

The best time to visit Penang is during its dry season from December to March, as the weather is less rainy. And there are many festivals, like Chinese New Year and Christmas Day. 

But if you plan your trip wisely, you can still have a good time during the rainy season, because the rain only lasts for a while. For example, you can explore Penang Hill in the early morning to avoid crowds and rain. 

What to Wear in Penang 

Given the intense heat and high humidity in Penang, it’s best to wear lightweight shorts and quick-dry T-shirts. Despite the high temperatures, it’s recommended to pack a light jacket as the air-conditioning indoors can be quite strong. Slippers are advisable as they can slip on and off very easily, and they may not stain your clothes on rainy days. For long walks, a pair of comfortable sneakers is recommended.
