Kuala Lumpur Weather

Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, with high temperatures and high rainfall year-round. The city experiences no significant seasonal changes.

High Temperature All Year Round:

Kuala Lumpur's temperatures are fairly stable year-round, with no big fluctuations. Daytime highs typically hover around 32-33°C (89-92°F), while nighttime lows rarely drop to below 22°C (72°F). Given the high heat in the daytime, it is advisable to avoid outdoor activities between 12:00 and 15:00 when the heat is at its peak. After 17:30, when the sea breeze starts to pick up, the weather becomes comfortable, making it a better time for outdoor explorations.

While the outdoor heat can be intense, indoor air-conditioning offers a sharp contrast, often leaving visitors feeling quite cool. So, a light jacket may be needed when you’re indoors, just to stay comfortable.

High Yearly Rainfall & Frequent Sudden Showers:

Kuala Lumpur experiences frequent rain throughout the year, with the wettest months typically being March, October and November. Even during the driest month, Kuala Lumpur still receives an average of 125 mm rain. On average, the city sees annual rainfall of around 2,400 mm (94 inches). However, most rainfall comes in the form of short, intense afternoon or evening showers rather than prolonged periods of rain. Thus, they rarely disrupt travel plans significantly.

The rain can fall suddenly, so sometimes the weather forecast is not accurate. Regardless of whether forecast predicts sunny or rainy, it’s always a good idea to pack an umbrella that can handle both sun and rain.

Humidity

Due to its tropical climate, Kuala Lumpur experiences high humidity year-round, averaging around 80%. The humidity is more noticeable during the rainier months, but even in drier months, the air tends to be quite sticky. Visitors may find they sweat easily, so it’s a good idea to dress in moisture-wicking fabrics and pack several more clothes for change.

Kuala Lumpur enjoys its longest daytime of about 12h18min long in June, with the earliest sunrise and latest sunset respectively at around 7:06 and 19:24.

Its around 12-hour-long day length throughout the year caters to travelers with different lifestyles, whether they are early birds or night owls.

Daily hours of sunshine in Kuala Lumpur average about 6.5 hours. However, the real concern is the intense UV rays, with the UV index sometimes reaching as high as 11. Therefore, sun protection is essential during your visit - don’t forget to protect the back of your neck, as a sunburn there can make even a good night’s sleep impossible.

A Special Climate Phenomenon: Smoke Haze

Some years in August and September, smoke haze may hover over Kuala Lumpur. You’d better avoid going there in such weather condition, which is not suitable for outdoor activities. If you have to, it is advisable to carry a mask.
