Guide for Hakone Passes

When exploring Hakone, buying and using a pass can help you save money. The Hakone Freepass, a pass mainly used in Hakone and chosen by many visitors, allows you to ride Hakone’s eight modes of transportation unlimitedly during its validity period and enjoy exclusive discounts for some hot springs and art museums. It has different versions for you to choose from. Besides, there are also some other passes specialized for Hakone and its nearby area, like the Mount Fuji area. Depending on your specific itinerary, the best pass for you may vary.

Hakone Freepass

It is a widely welcomed choice for most tourists to visit Hakone. It comes in two versions, one departing from Shinjuku and one from Odawara, and each version offers both 2-day and 3-day passes.

Included Benefits

1. The Shinjuku departure version includes one round-trip ticket on the Odakyu Line between Shinjuku and Odawara.
2. Both the two versions include:
(1) Unlimited rides on 8 types of transportation in Hakone:
Hakone Tozan Train: Entire route from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto to Gora.
Hakone Tozan Cable Car: Entire route from Gora to Sounzan.
Hakone Ropeway: Entire route from Sounzan to Owakudani to Togendai.
Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, also called Hakone Pirate Ship: All routes between Togendai Port, Moto-Hakone Port, and Hakone-Machi Port.
Hakone Tozan Bus: Routes within the Hakone area.
Tourist Attraction Sightseeing Bus: Entire route.
Odakyu Highway Bus: Routes within the Hakone area.
Tokai Bus: Route from Moto-Hakone Port to Mishima Station.
(2) Discounts at many attractions, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum, The Little Prince Museum, Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, Pola Museum of Art, Owakudani, hot springs, shops, and restaurants throughout Hakone.

Tip: For travelers who purchase the Shinjuku-departure version of the Hakone Freepass, if you plan to take an ordinary train of the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station to Odawara Station and then transfer to the Hakone Tozan Train at Odawara Station to reach Hakone-Yumoto, both fares of the two journeys are covered by the pass. However, if you plan to take the Romancecar directly from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto Station, the pass covers only the base fare, and you will still need to pay for the limited express service.
