December to March: Ample Sunshine & Festival Atmosphere

From December to March, Malacca receives the least amount of rainfall over the year and enjoys more sunshine, which is perfect for outdoor activities. Due to the clustered distribution of attractions in Malacca and the inadequate public transportation, walking is the best way to travel from one site to another. Clear, sunny days make it easy and enjoyable to walk between historical attractions.

These months are also packed with exciting festivals like Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Ramadan (at the end of March in 2025 and 2026). Malacca, with its rich cultural mix, invites you to experience the best of various cultures. For example, during Chinese New Year, Jonker Street is decorated with red lanterns, full of festive atmosphere. The festive activities include community sing-alongs, a countdown to the New Year and fireworks, allowing you to experience the excitement of the festival.

Smart Travel Plan:

Since the temperatures stay high all over the year, also in the dry season, it’s advisable to start your day early in the cooler morning hours to avoid the high heat at noon. Visit landmarks like St. Paul's Hill and the Dutch Square for some great photos and peaceful moments before the heat and crowds arrive. When the sun is at its peak, you can grab a bite at a local restaurant and cool down in the air-conditioned place. After the daytime heat fades, it’s the perfect time to take a peaceful cruise at the Melaka River, and taste the local snacks in Jonker Street.

June to September: Less Rainy Durian Season

From June to September, Malacca experiences moderate rain although it’s the rainy season. Most of the time, the rain is light to moderate and passes quickly, so it won’t interrupt your sightseeing plans. In fact, after a quick shower, the temperature drops a bit, making it more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Walking in the rain also lets you experience Malacca in a different way, with fewer tourists and a unique atmosphere.

Besides, June to September is the durian season in Malacca. The unique thing about Malaysian durians is that they can only be eaten once they naturally fall from the tree, unlike those in Thailand, which are picked by hand before they are completely ripen. As a result, Malaysian durians tend to be sweeter and creamier. In addition to tasting delicious and affordable durians on the streets, visitors can also drive to durian farms, where they can enjoy not only durians but also jackfruits and coconuts, while taking in the beautiful farm surroundings.

Shoulder Season in Malacca

Apart from the ideal months mentioned before, the remaining months can also be a good time to visit Malacca. Despite frequent showers, the fewer tourists and lower prices for hotels and flights make it a good option for budget-friendly travelers. However, it’s best to avoid November, as it sees the highest monthly rainfall - 239mm with an average of 17 rainy days.
