Guyana Indepth Exploration

Today, you will be escorted to Eugene F. Correia International Airport (Ogle Airport) to take an early morning flight to Iwokrama Fair View airstrip. Upon landing, your driver will pick up and transfer you to Iwokrama River Lodge. Iwokrama is the habitat of many Guiana Shield endemics birds and monkeys. You will have a precious chance to spot White-winged Potoo, Rufous Potoo, and Rufous-winged Ground-cuckoo here. After dinner, a river boat tour will be arranged for you to try to find the caiman and listen for the night birds. With flashlights, you may see the eyes of snakes, tree frogs and some mammals.

In the early morning, you will have a short boat trip on the Essequibo River. Then get back to the lodge to have breakfast. Afterwards, you will be transferred by car through the rainforest. Wildlife is often seen along the road and this is one of the best place to come across the elusive Jaguar. Hope you are one of the lucky ones.

The road adventure will end at Atta Rainforest Lodge, which is just 500 meters (0.3 miles) to the base of the famous Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. You will enjoy the delicious home-cooked food as lunch. After a short break, your indigenous guide will take you to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway and have a walk “on the top of the trees”. You may see Red Howler and Black Spider Monkeys.

Before breakfast, you will be accompanied to Iwokrama Canopy Walkway to enjoy the dawn chorus. Then return to the lodge for breakfast and afterwards, drive southwards for about 95 kilometers (59 miles) to Ginep Landing. Upon arrival, you will be led to take a boat trip on the Rupununi River. During this trip, you will have a precious opportunity to see the Giant Otters as several family groups live in this area. The boat trip will take you to Karanambu Lodge where you will stay overnight.

As dusk falls, you will take a boat to the ponds where you could see the giant Victoria amazonica waterlily, bloom at dusk. On the return trip, we will focus on the Black Caiman and nocturnal birds and creatures.

In the early morning, you will be guided to a vast expanse of grassland, which is home to a group of giant anteaters. The giant anteater is also called ant bear, which has long snout, bushy tail and long fore-claws. You may see one of them excavating its breakfast from the mounds that stud the savannah.

Afterwards, you will get back to the lodge for lunch and then have a rest at the hotel. In the late afternoon, your guide will take you to visit a nearby pond, which is the roosting of hundreds of Ibis, Anhinga, Heron and Egret. You can also explore along the river to search for more birds like Spotted Puffbird, Striped Woodcreeper and Agami Heron. In addition, you could also walk along the airstrip in the evening to listen to the nightjar.

If you haven’t met the giant anteater yesterday, you still have some time to explore the savannah before breakfast today. After breakfast, you will take a motorized boat to the Caiman House Field Station, where you have a precious opportunity to assist in data collection in an ongoing field study of the Black Caiman. (Caiman tagging only in dry season when there are sandbanks to haul out the caiman on.)

After breakfast, you will be taken to Lethem to take a flight to Georgetown. Upon arrival, your guide will pick you up and help you to check in at the hotel.

Today’s lunch will be arranged on your own. Then you will be guided to do a city tour. You will visit the residence of the Prime Minister, St. Georges Cathedral, the Town Hall, the Victoria Law Courts, St. Andrews Kirk, the Stabroek Market, the National Park and the Georgetown Botanical Gardens.

In the evening, a delicious dinner will be served at the Backyard Café. The host Chef Delven will greet you when you enter. If you are interested, you are welcome to join in the chef to learn how to cook Guyanese dishes.

Today welcomes the highlight of your trip, the icon of Guyana - the Kaieteur Falls, which is the world’s highest free-falling waterfall.

At the appointed time, you will be escorted to Eugene F. Correia International Airport (Ogle Airport) to take a flight to Kaieteur Falls to feel the power of spectacular waterfalls. On the way, you will fly over the Demerara and Essequibo Rivers and hundreds of miles of unbroken tropical rainforest. Here, you will also see the unique micro environment with Tank Bromeliads, in which the tiny golden frogs spend their entire life.
