Booking Policy
Ticket Price:

Half price for children aged 6-11 years old. Free of charge for children under 6. But they should share a seat with an adult holding a Japan Rail Pass.

Who Can Use:

1. Foreign tourists with a temporary visitor visa;   
2. Japanese citizens with overseas residency. 

Types and Validity

There are two types of JR Pass:  
Green for taking the green cars and ordinary cars.   
Ordinary for taking the ordinary cars; usage of green cars requires additional pay. 

 

Both are categorized into 3 valid periods: 7-day, 14-day or 21-day consecutively from the first use.

Reservation

1. Your name on the passport and your gender are required for reservation. 
2. Your delivery information should also be provided.  
3. An Exchange Order will be issued for you. After arriving in Japan, you can change it to an actual Japan Rail Pass at any one those exchange offices at JR stations.  
4. The Exchange Order must be changed to the Rail Pass within 3 months of booking.  

Cancellation Policies

1. The Exchange Order has not been exchanged the pass; 
2. Less than 10 months from the date of buying; 
3. 20% cancellation fee is charged.  

Where to Use

1. All Shinkansen, except Nozomi and Mizuho running along Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen.

2. JR trains running on traditional railway network, including Express, Limited Express, Rapid, and Local trains.

3. JR Bus local lines, including JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus, JR Kyushu Bus, excluding JR bus running on expressways and a few local bus routes.

4. JR Miyajima ferry between Miyajima and Miyajimaguchi.

FAQs about Japan Rail Pass
What is a Japan Rail Pass?
It is a kind of prepaid ticket issued for foreign tourists to take JR trains except Nozomi and Mizuho which run along Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines; lots of JR buses, JR Miyajima ferry and Tokyo Monorail.
Do I need to buy a Japan Rail Pass?
It is advisable to buy a JR pass if you will travel a lot along different railways; it saves. If you will only travel for once or two times, it is recommended to buy point-to-point tickets.
Can I buy JR pass in Japan?
No, you can’t. The pass can only be purchased outside the country. But you can reserve a seat by showing your rail pass in Japan.
Do I need to reserve a seat when I use JR pass?
Generally, there is no need to reserve a seat beforehand because most trains have non-reserved carriages. However, when there is no free carriage, you need to reserve one.
How to activate my JP rail pass?
a) Upon arrival in Japan, change the Exchange Order to the actual pass at one of the designated offices.
b) Set the starting date of the travel and the railway staff will print the date on the pass to activate it.

Note: When using the pass, you need to have it checked by the ticket checker instead of the automatic ticket checking machine.
