The route goes up and down, crosses dozens of small canyons and brooks and takes us through some spectacular scenery. By late afternoon we reach the road. Short transfer (10 miles / 20 minutes approx.) to our overnight hotel just outside Bryce Canyon National Park. All in all not a very long ride but quite a challenging day.

Bryce Canyon - Zion National Park (52 miles approx.)

Leave Bryce Canyon (7800 feet / 2400 metres) and continue in a westerly direction. Stop for a break after 12 miles near the Red Canyon with its distinctive bright red cliffs and hoodoos (tall thin spires of rock). From there turn onto a busier road heading south but the wide hard shoulder will allow a safe and comfortable ride. A mile after the small town of Hatch (6800 feet / 2000 metres) leave the main road to go off-road through Dixie National Forest which stretches for about 170 miles across southern Utah. Well enjoy amazing views and encounter undulating terrain. This afternoon we approach Stout Canyon (6400 feet / 1950 metres) and enjoy a welcome downhill stretch, outstanding scenery, different species of trees and a hint of Switzerland. From here well transfer one hour approx. to our overnight hotel in Springdale, a picturesque town located near the southern entrance of Zion National Park.

Zion National Park (20 miles approx. cycling & 4 - 5 hours trekking)

A full day to explore the beauty of Zion National Park. The area was given its heavenly name by 19th century Mormons, who saw the huge rocks as natural temples. At Zion we will actually be inside the canyon as opposed to the Grand Canyon and Bryce where we looked down into the canyons from above. The main road leads right into the heart of the park where the giant orange and red sandstone walls of the canyon rise all around. We leave our bikes to embark on a 4 - 5 hour trek along Weeping Rock Trail. The route leads up to an observation point to view the canyon from above. The hike and the scenery from the top of the cliff are breathtaking. In the afternoon we return to the same hotel in Springdale. This evening we enjoy a special dinner to celebrate the end of the ride.
