Itinerary Details
Welcome to Sri Lanka! As the second largest city of Sri Lanka with a history of more than 700 years, Kandy is considered a cultural and religious center, as well as a prominent pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Surrounded by a mountain area covered with the tropical rain forests, Kandy has a pleasant climate, and is also rich in Buddhist heritages. In the morning of the day you booked, our driver guide will reach your hotel in Colombo on time, and then take you to start this 1-day trip from Colombo to Kandy.

On the way, we will stop to visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the earliest and one of the largest Elephant Orphanages in the world. It was founded to take care of the orphaned Elephants from the jungles of Sri Lanka, and now the number of the elephants here reaches to 93. You will have an opportunity to get close to these smart beings, by watching them eat, play and bathe, and marvel at their flexible trunks. Then, we will continue to a Spice Garden, where you will indulge in the delightful aromas of the exotic spices, and learn to recognize some of them.

When arriving at Kandy, we will head to the Temple of the Tooth, the most sacred and iconic Buddhist temple in this city. Built in 1595, the Temple of the Tooth is located in a royal palace complex, and represents the traditional style of Sinhalese architectures. It has a pure façade comprising of white walls and red roofs, but the decorations and carvings inside are intricate and mesmerizing. The precious tooth relic of Shakyamuni Buddha is kept here in a sealed shrine with a golden top, which is well-decorated with hundreds of gems and diamonds. The relic is only on display once a year, during the 10-day ceremony - Esala Perahera, a torchlight parade, probably the largest Buddhist activity worldwide.

Coming out from the temple, we will end our Kandy day tour from Colombo with a visit to a tea factory. Here you will learn the history of tea in Sri Lanka, and see the process of tea production. You can also taste the Sri Lanka black tea to round off today's journey. After these visits, your driver will escort you back to your hotel. We wish you a pleasant trip, and is always ready to tailor you more day trips from Colombo!
