WT-Amman 01:Private Half Day Tour to Madaba, Mount Nebo and The Dead Sea
  • Day
    1
Amman - Madaba - Mount Nebo - The Dead Sea

You will leave Amman to visit Madaba a city known for it's mosaics. The most popular and well known is the ancient and most complete mosaic map of Jordan and the Holy Land of the 6th century in St George Orthodox Church, marked with the points of interest of some historical stories recorded in the Bible.

Next you will climb up Mount Nebo where Moses died. Enjoy the view of the Holy Land and also see more mosaics of different animals and figures found inside the church of Mount Nebo.

Visit the Dead Sea and the desert of Moab. It is the lowest point on earth at 1300 feet (400 meters) below sea level. The Dead Sea is one of the most incredible places in the world, known for the Biblical story of the destruction of Sodom and Amora, which was turned into salt. The Dead Sea speaks for itself; with no living fish in it! It is by far one of Jordan's most impressive and spectacular places to visit. Swimming in The Dead Sea is an incredible feeling as it is impossible to sink in the thick brine and is four times as salty as regular sea water. One can even recline on the water and read a newspaper. Due to the extremely high content of salts and minerals the water is known for its curative powers and its mud is used as various treatments.

The Rose Red City of Petra

Petra/Wadi Musa - breakfast. The beautiful UNESCO listed heritage site of the Rose city of Petra is a definite highlight of Jordan, and this has been seconded by people all over the world who have recently voted Petra one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Little is known about the Nabataeans, the tribe from Western Arabia who settled in the city around the 6th century BC, though its obvious when visiting the Rose city that they were gifted engineers and architects. The city was a flourishing centre of trade for many years until an earthquake devastated many buildings and their water management system around AD 663, after which a gradual decline set in and it was abandoned in 1189. The city lay undiscovered for hundreds of years until it was discovered by a Swiss explorer, Johann Burchkardt in 1812.

We take a guided walk through the narrow and 100 metres deep cleft in the mountains, known as the siq. We pass numerous inscriptions and carvings until reaching the awe inspiring Treasury, carved entirely from the Red rock. This building actually served as a royal tomb but got it's name from a legend of pirates who stored their treasure there. Many more amazing ruins follow including a huge 8000 seat amphitheatre and more royal tombs and mausoleums. If you are feeling energetic, climb the ancient steps to the Monastery to see stunning views of the area.

    Mosaics of Um ar-Rasas

Wadi Rum - Umm ar-Rasas - Mt Nebo - Madaba - breakfast. This morning, we visit Umm ar-Rasas, a haunted deserted city on the ancient caravan routes. The village is the site of the now ruinous Roman garrison town of Kastron Mefaa, which developed during the Byzantine and Umayyad periods into a relatively important city. Large mosaic floors from two of its dozen or more churches have been painstakingly cleaned and protected. The mosaic floor of the Church of St Stephen dates to 785, over 150 years after Muslim rule was established in Jordan, and depicts the cities of the day including Jerusalem, with Palestinian cities below such as Nablus and Gaza and seven Trans-Jordanian cities including Philadelphia (modern-day Amman), Madaba and Karak.

Continuing our journey, we head to Mt Nebo - the single most important biblical site in Jordan. Having led the Israelites for 40 years through the wilderness, Moses finally saw, from this awesome vantage point, the Promised Land, that God forbid him to set foot in. We too can enjoy the excellent views offered of the Jordan River Valley, the northern shore of the Dead Sea, Jericho on the opposite bank and (on clear days) the towers on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. We then proceed to Madaba, a bustling Muslim-Christian market town and enjoy a Jordanian feast! Dinner and overnight - Madaba.
