Private Alexandria Day Tour - 6 Hours
Welcome to Alexandria, an ancient city located near the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. As the second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is not only the economical center of the country, but also is rich in history and cultural heritages. It was once the capital of the Ptolemaic Egypt and a silent witness to the alternation of the dynasties. There are many ancient architectures left by the ancient kingdoms, which show their past glory.

In the morning, our guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel in Alexandria and then escort you to start your private Alexandria day trip. The first ancient structure we will visit is the Pompey's Pillar, which was built in the Roman Egypt in 297 AD for honoring the Roman emperor Diocletian's victory. This 20-meter column constructed of a granite monolith is one of the biggest monolithic pillars built by the ancients and was the symbol of Alexandria 1,600 years ago. Nearby the giant pillar sits a statue of sphinx peacefully, which looks like a silent guardian of this area.

This three-storey catacomb is 35 meters deep, while the deepest level is now sunk in the underwater. Originally constructed in the 2nd century AD, this burial chamber belonged to a family initially, but later was expanded as a necropolis which can accommodate 300 bodies. Inside the catacomb, you will see various reliefs and sculpture in the combined styles of the Pharaonic, Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman. For example, the god Anubis in a Roman costume are depicted on some frescos. After the visit, we will take you to a nice local restaurant for lunch and have a short break.

In the afternoon, your Alexandria day trip will continue to the Citadel of Qaitbay, a defensive fort built of granite. It is located near the Alexandria Port, where once sat another one of Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages - the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. In 1477 AD, the Circassian Mamluk Sultan commissioned the Citadel of Qaitbay here to strengthen the defense against the Turks. Inside the fortress, you can also see some ancient weapons. If you climb atop the fort, you will enjoy a mesmerizing view of the Alexandria Port.
